When you think of the Silicon Valley, it's likely that you think about technology. But, you may not realize that tech jobs only accounted for 27% of all hiring demand in San Jose and San Francisco during January. That means 73% of all jobs that were posted in the Silicon Valley are for positions outside of IT. In January, there were more than 112,000 jobs available online in the San Francisco and San Jose areas that weren't IT or programming jobs. Although there was a slight seasonal decline in the end of 2012, this in a 12% year-over-year increase. (IT jobs grew in this area by about 7%.)
Hiring Demand for Professionals not in IT in the Silicon Valley
The most in-demand occupation within the Silicon Valley area (not in IT) was Marketing Managers. More than 6,100 jobs were available last month, an 11% increase compared to January of 2012. (As a note, Marketing Managers are the 2nd most in-demand job in this area, even when you include IT jobs. Only Software Engineers saw more hiring demand in January.) Other in-demand fields were Registered Nurses, Retail Sales Managers, Administrative Assistants, Retail Salespersons, Sales Managers, Accountants, Management Analysts, Industrial Engineers, and Market Research Analysts. 9 of these 10 jobs saw year-over-year growth. Only Industrial Engineers declined in the Silicon Valley, although it was by less than 1%.

Of the above 10 jobs, it's likely that Marketing Managers will be the hardest-to-fill. Marketers are in-demand across the US, so it may not be surprising to hear this. The average Hiring Scale score for Marketers across the US is an 89. Other jobs likely to be difficult-to-recruit are Industrial Engineers (scoring an 89) and Sales Managers (scoring an 82.)
