Hiring for Recruiters with Social Media Experience at New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on August 28, 2012 in Human Resources, Recruiters.

It's been a while since we covered hiring demand for recruiting professionals with social media experience and a few people have requested updated data. Over the past 90 days, more than 2,700 job ads were available that called for Recruiters to have social media skills and experience across the US – representing about 7% of all hiring demand for Recruiters in the past 90 days. Companies are more commonly integrating social media across more business processes – and HR and recruiting is no different. The number of job ads that require social media skills for Recruiters also reached a new all-time high, now up 40% year-over-year compared to the same time period in 2011 and more than 191% from 2 years ago. Connecting with potential candidates through social media platforms is a great way to attract talent and build relationships with applicants.

Below are the 10 most commonly required skills in Recruiter job ads that include social media as a skill set:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Applicant tracking software (ATS)
  3. Time management
  4. Microsoft PowerPoint
  5. Project Management
  6. Negotiation skills
  7. Microsoft Word
  8. Oracle HRIS
  9. Business development
  10. Software development

Many of these were expected, like knowing how to use ATS systems, Microsoft, and negotiation skills. However, we found it interesting that software development made the list. Upon further investigation and looking at the job ads, we saw that these positions will be sourcing a lot of technical jobs and these jobs require Recruiters understand software development to be able to source potential candidates. The same is true for business development – many of these recruiting positions will be sourcing for sales and business development positions. When you look at some of the most common job titles for Recruiters, this may be confirmed. In addition to "Recruiter" and "Sourcer" some common titles include: Sales Recruiter, Information Technology Recruiter

Recruiters with social media skills are most frequently recruited for jobs located in New York City, Chicago, Washington (DC), Boston, and Los Angeles. While employers in New York placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool, one of the highest year-over-year growth areas was actually seen in Los Angeles where demand grew more than 73% in the past 90 days compared to the same time period in 2011. The second highest growth was seen in Boston, up 62% versus last year.

As hiring demand continues, a limited talent supply of potential candidates with proven social media experience will create challenges for employers. The Hiring Scale™ shows that employers across the US spend about 5 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for recruiting positions that require social media skills. However, each location experiences a varying degree of difficulty. Companies in San Francisco, CA and Minneapolis, MN are currently seeing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions. Fierce competition has emerged as more employers are looking to fill jobs in these areas than the local talent supply can support. In these 2 areas, the average posting period is 6 weeks, meaning it is likely to take 1 week longer to fill social media recruiting positions than on average across the United States.

Our Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Rochester, NY and Milwaukee, WI. Lower hiring demand in these areas, a larger talent supply, and better overall conditions means that Recruiters are likely to fill open recruiting jobs that require social media skills faster than average.

Hiring for Social Media Skills Begins 2012 at New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on February 16, 2012 in Advertising/Marketing, Occupations.

Now that we are more than halfway through February, we thought we'd review hiring demand for social media skills. It's been a while since we reported on demand and supply of this talent, and we wanted to see if it is still a prevalent skill being listed in job ads.

During January 2012, there were about 13,000 job ads posted online that included job requirements involving social media skills. This is an 87% increase compared to the volume of ads in January 2011. Despite some declines in the volume of ads in November and December (likely just a seasonal trend), hiring has steadily increased over the past few year and has now hit a new high. We think it is safe to say that social media is not "just a trend" and that this will continue as more business functions adopt social strategies.

As we see more social media platforms and ways to engage an audience online, the roles that demand these skills are changing. Marketing Managers and Public Relations Specialists are the 2 most common jobs that include this requirement in job ads. Marketers account for about 2,600 of the job ads at a 58% year-over-year increase. PR Managers and Specialists saw about 1,500 job ads, also increasing about 57% compared to January 2011.  Other common fields to require social media knowledge or experience in their job listings were Web Developers, Sales Representatives, Market Research Analysts, Recruiters, Software Engineers, Advertising Sales Agents, and Executive Secretaries or Administrative Assistants. These occupations also saw year-over-year increases in hiring demand. Sales Managers grew by more than 500% between January 2011 and January 2012 – the most of any occupation. Recruiters saw the second highest increase, up 131%.

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that social media skills are still moderately difficult to recruit. However, the degree of difficulty will vary by location depending on local talent supply and hiring demand. For example, Recruiters in Houston are likely to find these jobs harder than average to fill. The average duration of a job ad in Houston is 45 days – or just less than 7 weeks. In comparison, the average posting period across the US is about 6 weeks.

Demand for Social Media Skills Still Growing

By Abby Lombardi on December 2, 2011 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

From the FTC's privacy settlement with Facebook to Google+ making business pages available, social media has been a major topic in recent news. These recent announcements and changes are likely to change the way businesses use social media as a strategy to connect with current and potential customers, and employers have not slowed their demand for professionals with social media skills. Hiring for social media skills continues to grow, with almost 9,000 new online job ads for this skill set over the past 30 days – a 48% increase versus the same time period in 2010.

Below is a list of the 10 occupations that saw the highest volume of job ads with social media experience requirements. Not surprisingly, job ads for marketing and public relations positions most commonly include these skill requirements. It also seems that sales professionals are more frequently being required to connect with their customers online. The volume of job ads for Sales Representatives of Services and Financial Services saw the largest year-over-year growth of the below list.

Occupation Volume of Job Ads % Change vs. 2010
Marketing Managers 1,561 +0.3%
Public Relations Specialists 1,014 +16.3%
Sales Representatives, Services 954 +1,734.6%
Web Developers 835 +21.7%
Public Relations Managers 539 +43.7%
Advertising Sales Agents 362 +122.1%
Market Research Analysts 351 +7.7%
Personnel Recruiters 282 +65.9%
Sales Agents, Financial Services 273 +13,550.0%
Computer Software Engineers, Applications 255 +32.8%

We used our Hiring Scale™ to look at the locations that are currently experiencing the easiest recruiting conditions for each of these 10 occupations. If you're sourcing for candidates with social media experience, try looking for potential candidates in these areas since the talent supply is larger in relation to the hiring demand.

Hiring Demand for Recruiters Increases Again in August

By Abby Lombardi on September 13, 2011 in Recruiters.

During August, more than 6,000 new online job ads were posted for Recruiters.  About 3,200 (52%) jobs were advertised by staffing firms and 2,800 were posted by employers (48%), both seeing about a 26% increase compared to the beginning of the year. This also represents a 31% year-over-year growth in hiring demand.

Not only has the volume of job ads for Recruiters increased over the past years, but the number of direct employers looking to hire recruiting and staffing professionals has grown.  Across the US, more than 1,400 direct employers placed new job ads for Recruiters in August. In comparison, 1,109 employers advertised openings in August 2010, 612 employers in August 2009, and 1,243 direct employers in 2008. Additionally, employers are hiring for multiple openings. For example, Verizon is currently advertising the most jobs of any US employer, with 65 unique listings online.

Not surprisingly, the most common job title that has been advertised is Recruiter. Another common job title (not containing "Recruiter" or "Recruiting") is Staffing Professional.

However, the increase in hiring demand has caused recruiting conditions to become more difficult than in the past. There are currently 9 potential candidate in the workforce for every recruiting job ad online in the US during August, according to our Hiring Scale™.  One year ago, the nationwide talent pool of Recruiters consisted of about 19 candidates and two years ago, there were about 37 in the workforce. The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads during August were New York, Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston – all of which have seen increased hiring demand and are likely to see more difficult recruiting conditions than on average. Washington, DC has the smallest talent pool of these 5 locations.  The talent pool here currently consists of about 7 potential candidates per job ad. Last year, their talent pool had about 12 candidates and 27 candidates in 2009.

Demand for Recruiters Continues Steady Growth

By Juli Morris on July 14, 2011 in Recruiters.

The current pace of US job growth in most economic sectors is troubling, especially following last Friday's BLS report, but corporate HR departments and staffing agencies continued to grow their hiring demand for recruiters in June, up 2.7% over May. On a year-over-year basis, demand has grown 36% over June 2010, with over 5,900 new job ads posted. Ads posted by direct employers accounted for about half this activity, with nearly 2,900 ads or 48% of overall demand. Demand by direct employers increased at a faster pace, however, up 53% over June 2010 vs. a 24% increase for staffing agencies.

Except for the New York City and Seattle metro areas, demand for recruiters showed double-digit increases in all of the top 25 metro areas over June 2010. The hottest growth spots were the Columbus, San Francisco, St. Louis, Boston, and Phoenix metro areas, with gains ranging from 82% to 150% over June 2010.

Despite the high demand in metro NYC, the story continues to be in Silicon Valley, the Bay Area and Seattle, where these positions remain harder to fill: our Hiring Scale™ metrics show San Francisco with 16 candidates for every new position, and San Jose with 13 candidates. High demand in Boston has made positions there harder to fill as well, with 23 candidates per new position.

Demand for Recruiters up 64% in 2011

By Juli Morris on June 9, 2011 in Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

Although the pace of US job growth appears to be slowing for most sectors, hiring demand for recruiters by corporate HR departments and staffing agencies has boomed this year, up 64% since January. On a year-over-year basis, demand was up 36% over May 2010, with over 10,100 new job ads posted. Hiring by direct employers made up the bulk of this activity, with over 6,600 ads or 66% of overall demand. Demand by direct employers has also increased at a faster pace, up 44% over May 2010 vs. a 24% increase for staffing agencies.

Demand for recruiters increased in all of the top 25 metro areas over May 2010: metro NYC still has more than double the demand for recruiters as metro LA, the next highest, but the hottest growth spots were the Minneapolis, Columbus, and Raleigh metro areas, all with gains of more than 100% over May 2010.

Although metro NYC and LA have the greatest hiring demand and double-digit growth from May 2010, filling positions in these locations is only of average difficulty because they also has the largest talent supplies, with 18,000 potential candidates in the metro NYC area, and 6,600 in LA. It's a different story in northern California: our Hiring Scale™ metrics show San Francisco and San Jose each with 9 candidates for every position. Sacramento, which is not in the top 25 metro areas, would be a good place to source talent for San Francisco and San Jose. There are 16 candidates for each position in Sacramento, and a talent pool not much smaller than that of San Jose, competing there for less than half as many open positions.
