Hiring Goes Green for Earth Day

By Abby Lombardi on April 22, 2013 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

Happy Earth Day! In celebration, we looked at hiring demand for "green" jobs in the US. In total, there were more than 256,000 jobs posted online in the past 90 days that are considered "green." This is an 8.4% increase, when compared to the same 90-day period in 2012. It seems that every year, the number of environmentally beneficial jobs increases.

Below are the most commonly advertised "green" job titles:

  1. Electrical Engineer
  2. Mechanical Engineer
  3. Electrician
  4. Manufacturing Engineer
  5. HVAC Technician
  6. Senior Electrical Engineer
  7. Owner Operator
  8. Environmental Engineer
  9. HVAC Service Technician
  10. Maintenance Supervisor

Engineering-related jobs are highly in-demand to create the next generation of environmentally-friendly products. In addition, we see many Electrician and HVAC positions, since  many homes and buildings are trying to reduce energy costs by installing "greener" air conditioning and heating systems.

The cities that saw the most demand over the past 90 days were New York, Houston, Washington (DC), Los Angeles, and Boston. Of these 5 metro areas, only Washington DC experienced a year-over-year decline in demand. Over the last 90 days, there were about 5,400 "green" jobs advertised online in the DC metro area, which is 4% fewer than were posted online in 2012. In comparison, Houston had the largest increase, with 21% more green jobs available online in the last 90 days versus the same time period in 2012.

Engineering Jobs Still Grow to New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on March 11, 2013 in Engineering.

Hiring for engineers continues and many Recruiters have been searching for information on sourcing these professionals. With growing interest, we decided to look at overall engineering hiring demand. Here are most commonly advertised engineering job titles:

  1. Mechanical Engineer
  2. Electrical Engineer
  3. Manufacturing Engineer
  4. Quality Engineer
  5. Engineer
  6. Project Engineer
  7. Process Engineer
  8. Design Engineer
  9. Engineering Technician
  10. Senior Electrical Engineer
  11. Senior Mechanical Engineer
  12. Test Engineer
  13. Mechanical Design Engineer
  14. Industrial Engineer
  15. Technician

January saw a new high in jobs being advertised, with more than 280,000 postings. About 82% of these jobs were advertised by employers directly, while staffing firms and other recruiting agencies accounted for about 18% of postings. The industries with the most demand for engineers were Engineering Services, Semiconductor and Related Device Manufacturing, and Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences (except Biotechnology). Engineering Services had the most ads in January with more than 15,000, growing 13% compared to January of 2012.

Employers in Houston have the most jobs being advertised currently, with about 4,900 listings. Los Angeles, Detroit, San Jose, and New York round out the top 5 metro areas with the most job ads for Engineers. Of these 5 locations, our Hiring Scale shows that Engineers are likely to be the hardest to fill in Detroit. With growing demand (up 30% year-over-year in January), there is more competition to attract talent. However, the talent pool in Detroit is the smallest of these locations. In comparison, employers in New York are likely to experience better conditions. While Detroit scores a 72 (highest possible score of 99,) New York's Hiring Scale score is 41. It's likely to be easier than average to fill engineering jobs in New York than the national average.

Hiring for Drivers Just Keeps on Trucking

By Abby Lombardi on March 5, 2013 in Truck Drivers.

As the demand for goods increases, companies are concentrating on keeping their supply chain in tact and a big part of the supply chain involved Truck Drivers. Over the past 90 days, more than 230,000 jobs were advertised online for Truck Drivers in the US, representing a 20% increase compared to the same 90-day period in 2012.

Hiring Demand for Truck Drivers – 4 Year Hiring Trend

The metro areas that currently have the most online job postings include:

  1. New York, NY
  2. Washington, DC
  3. Chicago, IL
  4. Los Angeles, CA
  5. Boston, MA

The New York metro area currently has about 142,000 job ads posted online. Employers in this area not only have the hugest number of job postings, but also saw the highest year-over-year growth. When comparing the past 90 days to the same 90-day period in 2012, the volume of job ads grew 41% for Truck Drivers.

As hiring demand for Truck Drivers continues, it is likely to become increasingly difficult to source enough potential candidates. Our Hiring Scale shows that Drivers are likely to be the most difficult-to-recruit in Bismarck (North Dakota), Hinesville (Georgia), and Bowling Green (Kentucky). Nationally, the Hiring Scale ranks truck Drivers as a 64 (out of 99, with 99 would represent the most difficult situation. However, in these 3 cities, the Hiring Scale Truck Drivers as a 93. In these cities, there is increase competition among employers to attract candidates and Recruiters are likely to experience a longer time-to-fill. For example, the average posting period for a Truck Driver – meaning how long a job ads remains online – in Bowling Green, Kentucky is more than 8 weeks. The national average is about 6.5 weeks.

On the other hand, the Hiring Scale also shows that Truck Drivers are likely to be the least difficult to recruit in Salisbury (Maryland), Morristown (Tennessee), and Sebastian-Vero Beach (Florida). These three cities score a 5 on the Hiring Scale and average a 4.5 week posting period, meaning that employers are likely to fill jobs faster and with less difficulty.

Hiring "Crunch Time" for Accountants

By Abby Lombardi on February 12, 2013 in Accounting/Finance.

Have you filed your taxes yet? You still have time until April 15th, but employers might be feeling the crunch to fill any Accountant jobs that remain open. After a likely seasonal decline at the end of 2012, job postings began to bounce back in January. Last month, there were more than 72,000 jobs available online for Accountants, representing a 4% year-over-year increase.

Hiring Demand for Accountants – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Below are the 10 most commonly required skills in accounting job ads. Oral and written communication skills are important to most positions, but could be seen as particularly important in accounting jobs since Accountants and Auditors need to interact with clients or other parts of a business regarding finances. With more parts of a job becoming computerized, it's not too surprising that general ledger software appears on this list. Do any of the below skills surprise you?

  1. Oral and written communication skills
  2. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  3. Public accounting
  4. Microsoft Office
  5. Financial reporting
  6. General ledger software
  7. Detail oriented
  8. Analytical skills
  9. Internal audit
  10. Problem solving

The cities that are experiencing the highest number of available jobs are currently New York, Washington (DC), Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston. You might expect New York to be on top, since it is the financial capital of the US. Despite the highest hiring demand in the US, companies recruiting for Accountants in New York City are actually likely to have less difficulties than average. The largest available pool of potential candidates is also in NY, which means that the stresses and strains of demand on the talent supply won't be as great. Recruiters aren't likely to see as much competition from other employers.

Some of the locations with the most difficult conditions for sourcing Accountants are Niles-Benton Harbor (MI), Grand Forks (ND), and Sherman-Denison (TX).  While job postings remain online for an average of about 6 weeks, jobs in these 3 locations are likely to take longer to fill. For instance, accounting job ads have an average posting period of almost 8 weeks in the Niles-Benton Harbor metro area. This is 2 weeks longer than the national average.

Did Super Bowl Advertisers Ramp Up Hiring for Ad Talent?

By Abby Lombardi on January 29, 2013 in Advertising/Marketing.

Super Bowl XLVII is this Sunday and many people are anxiously awaiting the best part – the commercials! We thought it would be interesting to take a look at companies slated to have commercials during the game to see if they've been ramping up hiring demand for advertising talent.

Here is a list of some companies that bought space:

  • Anheuser-Busch
  • Cars.com
  • Doritos (Pepsi Co)
  • GoDaddy.com
  • Lincoln (Ford Motor)
  • Milk Processor Education Program
  • PepsiCo
  • Skechers
  • Tide (Proctor & Gamble)
  • Volkswagen
  • Audi
  • Chrysler
  • e-Trade
  • Hyundai
  • M&M's (Mars)
  • Oreo (Mondelez International)
  • RIM
  • SodaStream International
  • Toyota
  • Walt Disney
  • Axe (Unilever)
  • Coca-Cola
  • Gildan Activewear
  • Kia
  • Mercedez-Benz
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Samsung
  • Taco Bell (Yum! Brands)
  • Universal Pictures
  • Wonderful Pistachios (Roll International)

Of the above 30 companies, we found 18 that have advertised for advertising positions online in the past 120 days.  Some companies may not have hired new advertising professionals because many use an advertising agency to develop and produce their ads, or they already have the internal talent to create their ads for the Super Bowl. Many of the companies saw year-over-year declines in hiring, when compared to the same 120-day time period last year. 5 companies, however, experienced higher demand this year than last.

It's not surprising that many of the jobs are located in the NY metro area. New York City typically sees high volumes of advertising related job ads. Other cities seeing increases included Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Jose. With several auto manufacturers slotted for commercials, it's likely increased hiring demand in Detroit makes sense.

In-demand Technology Job Titles for 5 High-Demand Cities

By Abby Lombardi on July 18, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Information Technology - XLK.

We often report on hiring trends in the tech industry. As most people probably know, these jobs have been growing in demand over the past years. Instead of just updating you on the volume of job ads, we thought it might be more interesting to compare the most in-demand job titles in the 5 cities with the most IT related job listings. Those 5 cities are: New York, Washington (DC), San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Before scrolling down to read the lists, do you think the job titles will be the same in each city?

These 5 cities all have some commonalities, and some differences. First of all, Java Developer is the most commonly advertised job title in each of these locations. New York City and Chicago both had high demand for .NET Developers, while this title didn't appear for the other 3 cities. Also, we were surprised that Web Developer only appeared for one location – Los Angeles. This is surprising because Web Developers are one of the most in-demand tech occupations, yet this job title may not be used most commonly. Are there other job titles you use for Web Developers?

New York City:

  1. Java Developer
  2. Project Manager
  3. Senior Java Developer
  4. Business Analyst
  5. .Net Developer
Washington, DC:

Where Were the Jobs in June?

By Abby Lombardi on July 9, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators, Occupations.

Now that June has passed, we thought it would be a good time to review what jobs were most in-demand during June 2012 and where they were located. Overall, there were more than 5.3 million job ads seen online during June. This is a 17% increase in the number of postings compared to June of 2011. Employers accounted for about 84% of job listings, whereas staffing firms and recruiting agencies posted about 16% of the job openings.

Below are the 10 metropolitan areas that had the most job ads online during June, all of which experienced year-over-year increases in the number of ads. Once again, New York saw the highest hiring demand with 300,000 available postings. Los Angeles, Washington (DC), Chicago, and Boston rounded out the top 5 cities. However, Houston saw the greatest growth compared to June of 2011, with 27% more job ads this year than last.

The following chart shows the 10 occupations with the highest number of online job listings during June 2012. Registered Nurses were the most in-demand, with 246,000 postings and a 22% year-over-year growth. However, Food Preparation Workers grew the most when compared to last year, more than doubling the demand. Technology jobs were also in high demand, with 4 of the below being computer related.

Seeing that Registered Nurses were the most in-demand occupation during June, it's not too surprising that Medical and Surgical Hospitals were the industry with the most job ads. Also, since food preparation workers were highly advertised, Limited Service Restaurants appeared as one of the fastest growing industries in June.

Will the Affordable Care Act Impact Healthcare Jobs?

By Ashley Rowe on July 7, 2012 in Health Care.

In a recent article posted by Media Matters for America, they discuss a point made by Bill O’Reilly, during The O’Reilly Factor, on the effect of Affordable Care Act on jobs. O’Reilly was quoted “Because the uncertainty continues, the hiring is going to be blunted, and the economy is going to be harmed.”

However, healthcare positions are on the rise. The Affordable Care Act provides more people with healthcare, bringing an influx of patients to health facilities, which will need to employ more healthcare professionals to attend to patients.

In May 2012 there were 798,860 job ads filling healthcare positions. That’s up 14% from a year ago and 38% since May 2009. The most in-demand positions include:

1. Registered Nurses
2. Physical Therapists
3. Occupational Therapist
4. Occupational Therapist Assistant
5. Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses
6. Speech-Language Pathologists
7. Nursing Aides, Orderlies, and Attendants
8. Medical Assistants
9. Physical Therapist Assistants
10. Physician Assistants

New York City leads in terms of demand followed by Houston, TX.

Do you think hiring will continue to trend up over the next year?
