Mobile Technology Jobs Still Reaching New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on April 24, 2013 in Computer/Math/IT.

It seems like every day there are more announcements about new mobile developments. With all the recent news about mobile technology, we wanted to take an updated look at hiring demand for mobile tech talent. In March 2013, there were more than 82,000 jobs available online for computer and IT talent that have mobile skills. This is not only a 22% year-over-year increase from last March, but also marks a new high in demand.

Below are the 10 technical occupations that had the most job postings during March. Of the below, only Systems Software Developers declined in demand compared to last year. IT Project Managers and Applications Software Developers increased the most, up 47% and 33% respectively.

  1. Software Developers (Applications)
  2. Web Developers
  3. Computer User Support Specialists
  4. Network and Computer Systems Administrators
  5. Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers
  6. Information Technology Project Managers
  7. Computer Systems Analysts
  8. Computer Programmers
  9. Computer Systems Engineers/Architects
  10. Software Developers (Systems Software)

With the growing demand, and considering that tech jobs are generally hard-to-fill, it's probably not surprising that Recruiters are likely to experience challenges when sourcing potential candidates for these positions. Our Hiring Scale scores mobile technology jobs as a 78, out of a possible 99. This means that these jobs are likely to be very difficult-to-fill on average across the US. The below heat map of major metro areas in the US confirms this. There are only a few green locations, which would represents locations that currently represent the best conditions for finding qualified potential candidates.

The most difficulties are likely to be seen in Columbia (MO), Bloomington-Normal (IL), and Dubuque (IA). These 3 locations all score higher than a 90 on our Hiring Scale. San Francisco, part of the Silicon Valley, is the 4th hardest location, scoring an 88.

Recruiting for Mobile Developers Is Getting More Difficult

By Abby Lombardi on July 31, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Information Technology - XLK.

Has your company gone mobile? If they haven't yet developed a mobile strategy, chances are they will be soon – and you will need to source and hire candidates to fill mobile positions. One of the mobile jobs that is most in-demand is Mobile Developers. During June, more than 22,000 job ads were placed online for Mobile Developers in the US. Hiring demand for this talent has grown quickly, now up 159% year-over-year from June 2011 and marking a new high in the volume of available job listings. Among the most commonly advertised job titles for mobile developers are Web Developer, Java Developer, .NET Developer, Application Developer, and Android Developer.

Mobile development skills are most frequently advertised for jobs located in the New York metropolitan area. During June, more than 2,800 job ads in New York included mobile developers and grew more than 137% over the past year. Other metro areas with high demand for these skills were San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington (DC), and Chicago.

The most demanded mobile development skills required by employers are:

  1. JavaScript
  2. Hypertext markup language (HTML)
  3. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
  4. Android OS
  5. Java
  6. Project management
  7. Mobile development
  8. Website development
  9. jQuery
  10. Ruby

As hiring demand continues (and does anyone expect it won't?), the fact that there are a limited number of qualified potential candidates will cause challenges for many employers. There are currently 3,056 companies currently advertising for Developer jobs that require mobile skills – and most are sourcing candidates for multiple positions. In fact, the company with the most job listings is has more than 200 unique job ads online. Competition will be fierce as Recruiters will need to compete against other companies and themselves to fill all these positions.

Our Hiring Scale™ confirms this difficulty and shows that Recruiters spend approximately 5.5 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for Mobile Developer jobs. Recruiters in Washington, DC are currently experiencing some of the most challenging conditions when recruiting candidates. Employers here are likely to experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States, with job ads remaining online for more than 6 weeks.

However, just as some locations will find it harder than average to fill jobs, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills. Among the best areas across the US are Salem (Oregon), Fresno (California), and Bakersfield (California). What makes it easier to fill jobs in these locations? Hiring demand in these areas is lower or hasn't grown as quickly. In addition, many of these areas have a larger talent supply – meaning there are more qualified candidates currently in the workforce in these locations. Recruiters that have Mobile Developer job openings that are hard-to-fill may find it useful to target job ads in these cities and try relocating talent.

Hiring for the "Best Computer Job For the Future" – Mobile App Developers

By Abby Lombardi on June 4, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Occupations.

ITCareerFinder.com recently named Mobile App Developers as the "Best Computer Job For the Future." We thought it would be interesting to look at recent online job ads to see if this position has seen skyrocketing demand already. With the growth in the mobile market, it's not too surprising that hiring demand has in fact grown. In May, more than 1,400 tech job ads called for mobile app developer skills. This is a 52% increase over May of 2011. In the below graph representing the number of available job ads online, you can see that the volume continues to trend up steadily every month.

Also not too surprising, is that our Hiring Scale shows these jobs are hard-to-fill on average across the US. Ares with the highest demand are likely to see more difficulties than average. For example, San Jose is one of the areas with the most job ads for Mobile App Developers. This level of demand, coupled with a limited talent pool that isn't growing at the same rate as hiring, means that Recruiters will compete heavily and experience a longer time-to-fill than average. In this area, job ads remain online for an average of 45 days – or about 6.5 weeks. On the other hand, it is likely for tech professionals with mobile developing skills to find work across the US, and especially in San Jose.

The limited available talent pool is seen due to the variety of skills often required in jobs for Mobile App Developers. In addition to need programming and software development knowledge, candidates need to know the different operating systems – specifically iOS and Android platforms. The 5 most commonly required skills are:

  1. Software development
  2. JavaScript
  3. iPhone (iOS)
  4. Android
  5. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

However, our Hiring Scale also shows that there are some regions in the US where Recruiters may find less competition and more potential candidates. For example, Recruiters in San Jose may find that the Riverside, CA metro area is a source of more candidates. With fewer employers currently sourcing for talent in this area, jobs are filled in an average of 38 days – 1 full week shorter than in San Jose.

As Mobile Internet Grows, Tech Hiring Increases for Mobile Developers

By Abby Lombardi on March 20, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT.

A study estimates that mobile internet usage will out-pace the number of people that regularly access the internet from a desktop in 2014. That's just 2 years away! To support this growth, employers are hiring more mobile developers to build apps, mobile-friendly websites, games, and find way to connect with their customers through mobile phones. Today, we looked at what types of high-tech jobs are being recruited with mobile experience, what skills are being required, and how hard-to-fill these jobs are.

During February, more than 19,000 job ads were placed online for mobile developers in the United States, representing an 82% increase compared to February 2011. Hiring demand is also up 295% compared to the same month in 2010, and more than 400% from February 2009. Mobile development requirements are included across all technology occupations, with Software Engineers, Web Developers, Java Developers, Project Managers, and Application Developers as the most common job titles to include these requirements in their ads.

We expected to see mobile developer skills most in-demand in the Silicon Valley area. However, the New York metropolitan area saw the highest volume of job ads for tech jobs that required mobile skills, with more than 1,800 job ads and growing 87% over the past year. Seattle saw the second highest volume of job ads this this skill set. Rounding out the top 5 metro areas for hiring of mobile developers were San Jose, San Francisco, and Washington (DC). While employers in New York placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool, one of the highest year-over-year growth areas was Washington, DC where hiring demand increased 102%.

The most demanded mobile development skills required by employers are listed below. If you are recruiting for a mobile developer, do you include these most common skills in your job ads? It's likely that these are the qualifications that most of your competitors are recruiting for as well.

  1. Java
  2. Android OS
  3. JavaScript
  4. Structured query language (SQL)
  5. HTML
  6. CSS
  7. Linux
  8. XML
  9. Unix
  10. AJAX

The most commonly advertised certifications for mobile developers include:

  1. Project Management Professional (PMP)
  2. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  3. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
  4. Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  5. Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)

As hiring demand continues, the talent pool remains limited and companies sourcing for mobile development jobs are likely to find them difficult-to-fill. According to the Hiring Scale™, Recruiters in San Francisco are experiencing some of the most challenging conditions when recruiting candidates with these skills since hiring demand outpaces the local talent pool of qualified candidates. Employers here are likely to compete heavily to attract potential candidates and experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States. In fact, Recruiters in this area keep job ads online for an average of 7 weeks.

In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Eugene (Oregon), Champaign (Illinois), and Wichita (Kansas). Lower hiring demand in these areas, coupled with larger talent supply, means that Recruiters are likely to fill job openings in as few as 4.5 weeks, more than 2 weeks faster than the national average. If you find mobile developer job ads hard-to-fill, you may want to place job ads in these areas and try to source potential candidates from these locations. It may help to reduce your time-to-fill and cost-per-hire for open job reqs.

Mobile App and Program Development Skills in Demand

By Abby Lombardi on November 1, 2011 in Computer/Math/IT, Hiring Demand Indicators.

As mobile banking, mobile commerce and mobile gaming increase in popularity among users, businesses are recognizing the need and benefit of connecting with customers through these mobile applications. Over the past 30 days, more than 15,000 new job ads were placed online for Computer Programmers with mobile developing skills – up more than 40% from one year ago.

Of the 3 leading mobile platforms – iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android – Android was most commonly mentioned. More than 3,200 job ads included specific requirements for developing on the Android platform, 2,200 mentioned BlackBerry and 2,100 listed iPhone. Some of the most commonly advertised Computer Programming job titles that require mobile developing skills include:

  • Software Engineer or Developer
  • Web Developer
  • Project Manager
  • Systems Administrator or Engineer
  • iPhone Developer
  • Java Developer
  • Network Engineer
  • Application Developer
  • Android Developer
  • Desktop Support

We also took a look at the metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads over the past 30 days and the average salary ranges in those areas. Of the 10 cities with the highest demand, 8 of them are advertising above-average salary ranges. Atlanta and Dallas are slightly lower than average.

Location Average Salary Range
Nationally $91,800 – $106,000
New York, NY $101,088 – $120,000
Seattle, WA $93,600 – $100,000
San Jose,CA $110,000 – $120,000
San Francisco, CA $110,000 – $124,800
Los Angeles, CA $100,000 – $111,000
Washington, DC $100,000 – $115,000
Chicago, IL $95,000 – $105,000
Atlanta, GA $90,000 – $100,000
Boston, MA $100,000 – $110,000
Dallas, TX $89,440 – $100,000

An increasing volume of job ads for a limited talent supply has caused moderately challenging recruiting conditions, with each location experiencing varying degrees of difficulty. Our Hiring Scale™ shows that the national talent pool consists of about 17 potential candidates with mobile skills for every job ad currently being advertised online. Of the ten cities with the highest volume of job ads, Recruiters in San Francisco are likely to find these jobs the hardest to fill since their talent pool is smaller in comparison to the local hiring demand. Recruiters are likely to compete more heavily to source talent for open positions, resulting in a longer time-to-fill and higher cost-per-hire.

From our Hiring Scale, we were also able to determine that the locations with the largest talent pools and easiest recruiting conditions are:

Computer Specialists with Mobile Skills in Demand on the West Coast

By Abby Lombardi on August 8, 2011 in Computer/Math/IT.

Hiring demand for Computer Specialists with mobile skills has increased tremendously so far in 2011.  Over the past 90 days, there have been more than 33,000 new online job ads for IT professionals with mobile skills.  The West Coast has seen the highest hiring demand, with over 7,700 ads placed.

Due to the increased hiring demand, recruiters will face difficult conditions when sourcing candidates for these openings.  Seattle has seen the highest volume of ads on the West Coast over this 90-day period.  In Seattle, more than 2,500 new jobs have been advertised online, a 42% year-over-year increase.  The Hiring Scale™ shows that the talent pool in Seattle consists of approximately 11 potential candidates in the workforce per open position, slightly better than the national average of 10 candidates.

Since there has been high demand on the talent pool over the past 90 days, recruiters may struggle to fill open mobile-related jobs.  An option for recruiters is to expand their candidate pools by searching for other commonly used job titles.  For example, Web Developers are one of the most commonly required to have mobile skills. However, our new Common Titles section of Analytics shows that many organizations have given them titles such as “Java Developers” or “.net Developers”.   Or if you are looking to find a mobile application developer, “Android Developer” or “iPhone Developer” are also often used.  By using these alternative titles in your candidate searches, recruiters may be able to build a candidate pipeline and tap into hidden talent pools.
