Hiring Demand in the 10 Best Places to Live

By Abby Lombardi on August 29, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

CNN Money just released their 2012 list of the Best Places to Live in the US. People may begin to look at living in these areas and jobs nearby, so we thought it would be interesting to look at hiring demand in these areas and their relative metro areas.

CNN Money's 10 Best Places to Live 2012

In the metro areas that are home to the above 10 towns, there were more than 890,000 jobs available online in July, an 18% increase compared to July of 2011. We looked at the metro areas to get a better sense of hiring demand in these areas of the US. Also, many times people work in the metro areas due to job availability, but live in the surrounding areas.

Below is hiring demand by each of the metro areas. All 10 experienced double-digit year-over-year increases in the volume of available job ads. The Los Angeles metro, home to Irvine, CA posted the most job ads of the above locations in July with more than 189,000 postings.  However, the highest growth was in Dallas, which is close to McKinney, TX. Seattle (Redmond, WA) and Minneapolis (Eden Prairie, MN) were close behind with more than 20% growth.

Below are the 10 most commonly advertised occupations in July within the 10 metropolitan areas above. Registered Nurses were most in-demand, like nationwide hiring. In addition, we see several technology occupation – Software Engineers, Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts, and Network & Computer Systems Administrators all appeared on the list. Also, Software Engineers had the highest growth compared to July of 2011, up 34.7% and just beating Registered Nurses for the fastest growth in the past year.

Most of the above listed occupations are highly demanded across the US.  Due to the high volume of job ads for a limited talent pool, it is likely that these jobs will be difficult to fill nationwide.  However, conditions will vary by each location.  For example, by looking at Indianapolis – home to the #1 location, Carmel – the recruiting conditions will be better than average for Registered Nurses. In comparison, our Hiring Scale shows that Dallas will find RN's a much more challenging position to fill.

In-demand Technology Job Titles for 5 High-Demand Cities

By Abby Lombardi on July 18, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Information Technology - XLK.

We often report on hiring trends in the tech industry. As most people probably know, these jobs have been growing in demand over the past years. Instead of just updating you on the volume of job ads, we thought it might be more interesting to compare the most in-demand job titles in the 5 cities with the most IT related job listings. Those 5 cities are: New York, Washington (DC), San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Before scrolling down to read the lists, do you think the job titles will be the same in each city?

5 Cities with the Most Tech Jobs in June 2012

These 5 cities all have some commonalities, and some differences. First of all, Java Developer is the most commonly advertised job title in each of these locations. New York City and Chicago both had high demand for .NET Developers, while this title didn't appear for the other 3 cities. Also, we were surprised that Web Developer only appeared for one location – Los Angeles. This is surprising because Web Developers are one of the most in-demand tech occupations, yet this job title may not be used most commonly. Are there other job titles you use for Web Developers?

New York City:

  1. Java Developer
  2. Project Manager
  3. Senior Java Developer
  4. Business Analyst
  5. .Net Developer
Washington, DC:

Hiring Trends Up in Los Angeles Metro Area

By Abby Lombardi on June 15, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

We've noticed that online job ads for Los Angeles has been trending up recently. So, we wanted to take a deeper look at which jobs are most in demand and if Recruiters are likely to find it difficult to source candidates in this area. In May, more than 186,000 job ads were posted online and represented a 9% year-over-year increase compared to May of 2011. In addition, this represents a new 4-year high in demand for this metro area.

The occupations with the most job ads in Los Angeles during May are below. Registered Nurses saw the most job ads, followed by Web Developers and Retail Salespersons. Of the below 10 positions, 7 experienced year over year increases in hiring demand. However, Web Developers, Retail Salespersons, and Computer Systems Analysts saw declining volumes of job ads when compared to May of 2011.

In addition, we looked at the tools, technologies, and certifications that are most commonly required in online ads for jobs located in Los Angeles. Since Registered Nurses were the most demanded occupation in Los Angeles last month, it's not too surprising that 4 out of 5 of the certifications listed below are healthcare related.

5 Skills in Demand In Los Angeles 5 Certifications in Demand in Los Angeles
  • Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Project management
  • Time management
  • Business development
  • Certified Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The level of difficulty to source candidates in this area will vary widely depending on the occupation's demand and talent supply in the local area. Not too surprisingly, our Hiring Scale™ shows that the harder to fill jobs in Los Angeles are technology and healthcare related. Both of these fields are in high demand across the US and are difficult to recruit nationwide. In Los Angeles, Software Engineers and Web Developers are likely to be harder to fill than most other occupations. Currently there aren't enough candidates in the local talent pool to meet the demand, meaning there is likely to be heavy competition among employers and a longer time-to-fill. In fact, the average posting period for these 2 occupations is about 6 weeks. Among the jobs with shorter posting periods are Executive Secretaries and Administrative Assistants, which job ads remain online for an average of 34 days – or just less than 5 weeks.

Where are the jobs (March 2012)?

By Carolyn Menz on April 14, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators, WANTED Analytics.

With just over 1.6 million new jobs posted online during the month of March, we thought it would be useful to take a look the industries, occupations, and cities with the highest demand.

With almost 80,000 new job ads placed online, Registered Nurses top our list as the most in demand occupation during March.  Despite seeing such a large volume of job ads placed for Registered Nurses, this actually represents a decrease of about 10% when compared to March 2011.  Computer Software Engineers (Applications) also saw a year-over-year decrease with just over 32,500 new job ads placed in March.  All of the other occupations in our list saw year-over-year increases.

Given the hiring demand for Nurses in March, it is not surprising that General Medical and Surgical Hospitals tops our list of industries with the highest hiring demand.  As we saw with our occupations, hiring in this industry is down approximately 11.5% versus March 2012.  The only other industry (in our top 10 industries by job ad volume) to see a year-over-year decline in hiring was Offices of Physicians.  The remaining 8 industries all saw year-over-year increases.

The New York metro area topped our list of cities with the most hiring demand.  There were almost 91,000 new online job ads placed for workers in the New York City area, a 2% decrease versus March 2011.  Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas rounded out the top five cities.

Hiring Demand to Build Robots Grows and So Do Jobs for Operating and Repairing Robotics

By Abby Lombardi on February 14, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Engineering.

Robotics is one skill set that is going through exponential growth in hiring demand. During January 2012, more than 2,100 job ads were posted online that included requirements for robotics skills – a 44% year-over-year growth compared to January 2011 and more than double the volume of online job ads in January 2010.

Volume of Job Ads that Include Robotics Skill Requirements – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The first fields that come to mind when you think about robotics skills are probably engineers and technology. Yes, these were the 2 fields that most commonly required them. More than 650 jobs were advertised online for Engineers, the most of any occupational field, at a 51% year-over-year increase. Technology related jobs that required robotics skills increased as well, up 66% from January 2011. However, we've also seen healthcare related occupations demand robotics skills more. As advancements in medical and surgical processes are made, we are seeing an increasing number of job listings that specifically require doctors and nurses to be able to operate robotics components. Another occupational field that is growing in demand for robotics skills are maintenance and repair professionals. As more robotics components are being used across all industries, there is a growing need for people to fix and repair these machines.

Metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job listings for robotics knowledge during January 2012 were:

  1. Atlanta, Georgia
  2. Boston, Massachusetts
  3. Detroit, Michigan
  4. Chicago, Illinois
  5. Los Angeles, California

Employers in Atlanta not only placed the highest number of online job ads for this skill set, but also saw some of the highest year-over-year increases at more than 160%. Detroit and Chicago also experienced growth in demand versus January 2011 – up 126% and 40% respectively. However, Recruiters in Boston and Los Angeles placed about 20% fewer job ads for robotics skills compared to last year.

Companies sourcing candidates for jobs that require knowledge to build or operate robotics are likely to find them moderately difficult-to-recruit, with conditions varying slightly by location depending on the available talent supply. Our Hiring Scale™ shows that companies in Detroit are currently experiencing one of the most difficult conditions when recruiting candidates with robotics skills. Hiring demand in Detroit continues to grow, while the local talent pool of qualified robotics-savvy professionals is not growing at the same pace. There are 45 employers sourcing for robotics candidates in Detroit – some with as many as 20 different jobs available. Employers in this area are likely to compete heavily to attract talent and experience a longer time-to-fill than many other areas across the United States.

If Real Estate Drives the Economy, Is Increased Hiring a Signal of Better Times?

By Abby Lombardi on February 13, 2012 in Real Estate.

It's often said that a healthy real estate market will drive an economy. We all know that the US real estate market has been tumultuous over the past several years.  If we watch hiring trends in this industry, will an increase in job ads signal that the market is getting better?

First of all, hiring seems to be increasing. After a decline in hiring demand during November and December (likely a seasonal trend), more than 9,300 job ads were posted online for jobs within the real estate industry in January 2012. This represents a 20% increase compared to the same month in 2011. Hiring has also increased compared to previous years – up 43% from January 2010 and 48% from January 2009. However, the volume of ads has not reached the highs seen pre-recession and is still down about 29% from January 2008.

Hiring Demands in the Real Estate Industry – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Hiring Demand in the Real Estate Industry - 4 Years

Source: WANTED Analytics

Within real estate, hiring at Real Estate Agents and Broker offices account for almost half the jobs that were posted during January. More than 4,100 job ads were posted online in this part of the industry, a 15% year-over-year increase. Residential Lessor offices placed the second highest volume of job ads, at a 37% increase. Commercial Real Estate offices placed the third highest volume of jobs, also seeing an increase of about 23% compared to last year.

New York, which has seen one of the more stable real estate markets over the past several years, also saw the highest hiring demand during January. There were more than 700 job ads posted online in this area, a 73% growth compared to 2011. Los Angeles, Washington (DC), Chicago, and Dallas were other cities with the highest number of job ads. Hiring in Los Angeles and Chicago increased compared to last year, while real estate companies in Washington, DC and Dallas placed fewer ads.

Hiring Trends in the 5 Cities with Most Real Estate Job Ads

Hiring demand by top 5 locations

Source: WANTED Analytics

With all the increased demand by the real estate industry, will recruiting be easy or difficult? Our Hiring Scale™ shows that these jobs are likely to be moderately difficult to fill nationwide. Despite hiring in New York growing so significantly over the past year, Recruiters here are likely to experience conditions in-line with national averages. On the other hand, Los Angeles is likely to see one of the most difficult conditions across the country. Although both New York and Los Angeles have seen considerable growth in hiring, the talent pool of qualified potential candidates in New York is larger. There are about 6,600 potential candidates currently working in the real estate industry in Los Angeles. In comparison, the pool of candidates is 2.5 times as large in New York. This means Recruiters sourcing for job openings in the New York area have more candidates to choose among, leading to more favorable recruiting conditions than will be seen in the Los Angeles area.

Will Hiring for Industrial Engineers Bounce Back?

By Abby Lombardi on January 25, 2012 in Engineering.

Yesterday, we posted some suggestions for recruiting Engineers across industries. This afternoon, we wanted to give a quick update on hiring demand for the most common type of engineering job – Industrial Engineers.

During December, about 13,000 job ads were posted online for Industrial Engineers – representing a 2% year-over-year increase from December 2010. Although this is up from last year, this is a significant decline since earlier in the year. As you can see below by the hiring demand graph, the volume of job ads increased steadily until a new 4-year high was reached in May when more than 20,000 jobs were advertised online. However, demand has declined and is almost flat with last year. However, when comparing to the past several years, demand has grown 72% versus 2009, and 49% from December 2008. Will hiring for Industrial Engineers grow again in 2012?

Hiring Demand for Industrial Engineers – Past 4 Years

Despite the volume of job ads increasing just 2%, the number of companies that are recruiting for Industrial Engineers has increased more significantly, up 15% in the past year. Some companies that posted the most job ads for Industrial Engineers during December were GE Energy, Genzyme, Boeing, Honeywell, and CNH.

The 5 metropolitan areas with the highest volumes of job ads during December are below. Organizations in Los Angeles not only placed the most job ads during December, but also experienced the greatest year-over-year increase in volume. Hiring demand in this area surged 38% between December 2010 and December 2011. Detroit, on the other hand, was the only location of these top 5 that saw a decline, placing 4% fewer job ads for Industrial Engineers than one year ago.

Hiring for Production Workers Grows 12%

By Abby Lombardi on January 6, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators, Occupations.

This week, it was reported that hiring in the manufacturing industry may be growing. We looked at demand for production jobs in the United States over the past 90 days for more insight to hiring and recruiting conditions.  Over the past 90 days, more than 65,000 jobs were advertised online for production occupations, growing 12% when compared to the same 90-day period last year. Despite increases over the past 2 years, demand is still significantly below what was seen during pre-recession times.

Hiring Demand for Production Occupations – 4 Years

10 production occupations that saw the greatest volume of online job ads over the past 90 days are below. 9 of these experienced year-over-year increases in hiring demand. First-line Supervisors and Managers had the greatest number of ads – more than 24,000 and representing a 9% increase. However, the highest year-over-year increase in demand was for Tailors, Dressmakers, and Custom Sewers, which increased more than 300% compared to last year. The only occupations to see a decline in demand were Welders, Cutters, and Welder Fitters for which Recruiters posted 4,200 jobs, 16% fewer than were advertised during the same 90-day period one year ago.

Production Occupations with the Highest Volume of Job Ads – Past 90 Days

The metro area with the highest demand for production jobs over this 90-day period was Chicago, Illinois. Recruiters in this area placed about 2,400 online job ads, which was a 13% increase from last year. Other cities with high demand included Los Angeles (California), Houston (Texas), New York (New York), Minneapolis (Minnesota), and Philadelphia (Pennsylvania).

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that production jobs will be relatively easy to fill across the nation. However, recruiting conditions will vary by  location, depending on hiring demand and talent supply in each area. For example, Minneapolis is likely to see conditions that are more difficult than average. In comparison, Recruiters in Chicago are likely to see some of the easiest conditions. Despite the highest hiring demand in the US, the talent pool in the Chicago metro area remains large meaning Recruiters have many potential candidates to source from.
