Tech hiring continues to grow, and there aren't any indications that it will stop. In March, there were 809,000 jobs posted online for programmers and technology professionals. With competition among employers continuing and recruiting becoming more difficult, we wanted to share the 15 licenses and certifications that are most commonly specified in IT job ads.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)

Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)

Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)

DoD 8570 Certification

Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)

Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

ITIL Foundation certification (v3)

Certified Scrum Coach

IBM Rational Unified Process Certification (RUP)

Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)

Various Microsoft certifications appear most often on this list – 4 of the above 15 are Microsoft related. Cisco certifications appear 3 times. We thought it was interesting that HIPPA certifications made this list. However, when we looked at the ads, the positions are at healthcare companies and involve regulated health tech systems or networks. As health technology grows with things like electronic medical records, IT professionals are being required to build, maintain, and ensure their systems are secure and meet federal guidelines. Do any of the above certifications surprise you?

What certifications do you require in job ads? Do you know how hard-to-fill they are likely to be?

Robotics is a growing area. While some people think that robots and automation will destroy jobs, others think that the growing use of automated processes and machinery will create jobs. In the past 90 days, there were 14,700 job ads available online that required use or knowledge of robotic components. This is a 11% year-over-year increase compared to the same 90-day period in 2012.

Hiring Demand for Jobs that Require Robotics Skills – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The fields that most commonly required robotics skills in the past 90 days included healthcare, engineering, production workers, repair and maintenance workers, and IT. Healthcare saw the most job ads posted online, with more than 4,700 across all health and medical related occupations. In addition, they also saw incredible year-over-year growth. The number of job ads posted online in the past 90 days that required robotics skills was up 32% compared to last year. We are seeing great growth in the healthcare area due to more surgeries and procedures using robotic devices to improve precision. Architecture and IT occupations actually decreased, down 8% and 3% respectively. Maintenance/repair jobs were up 9% and production occupations, which include occupations like welders and machinists, were up 12% from 2012.

The most commonly advertised job titles that required robotic skills include:

Maintenance Technician

Controls Engineer

Manufacturing Engineer

Welder

Registered Nurse

Welding Engineer

Gameroom Technician

Robotic Welder

Electrical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer

The 5 metro areas that currently have the most job ads for robotics-related positions are Boston (MA), San Diego (CA), Phoenix (AZ), Detroit (MI), and New York (NY). In the past 90 days, hiring demand in San Diego grew more than doubled compared to last year. Detroit also grew about 30%. You might automatically think the motor vehicle industry is driving the growth in Detroit. However, General and Medical Surgical Hospitals in the Detroit metro area had the most ads. Hiring in this industry was up more than 1000% in just Detroit.

Last week, New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced the "Made in NY" initiative will be expanded to technology, with the goal of encouraging tech startups and nurturing them to grow. The campaign, which started with the media and entertainment industries, allows companies with at least 75% of their production in the city to be able to display the “Made in NY” logo on their ads and websites. In addition, tech companies will be able to advertise jobs on the www.wearemadeinny.com website, which already has 3,000 openings listed by 980 tech startups in NYC. With tech demands surging across the US – and likely to grow in New York – we thought it was a good time to revisit hiring in the "Silicon Alley."

In January, there were more than 46,000 jobs posted online for technology positions in the entire New York metro area. New York City specifically saw 22,600 postings at a 4% year-over-year increase. The entire New York metro area saw the highest demand for technical skilled professionals during January, followed by Washington (DC), San Francisco, and Chicago. As a comparison, there were just over 44,000 tech jobs in the entire Silicon Valley, consisting of the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas, growing slightly faster than New York City at 8% year-over-year.

Hiring Demand in the New York Metro Area for Technology Professionals

Source: WANTED Analytics

The technical fields with the most job ads during January were web developers, computer systems analysts, and applications software engineers. The commonly advertised job titles in New York City are:

Java Developer

Project Manager

Senior Java Developer

.NET Developer

Business Analyst

Web Developer

Software Engineer

Network Engineer

Developer

Senior Software Engineer

The 5 most commonly required skills for IT job ads in New York are structured query language (SQL), Java, project management, oral and written communication skills, and problem solving.

When we look at our Hiring Scale, conditions in the New York metro area are comparable to national averages. Out of 99, where 99 would represent the most difficult-to-fill conditions, New York City scores a 78. Not surprisingly, this means Recruiters are likely to experience fierce competition to attract candidates. Job ads in New York City remain online for an average of 39 days, or about 5.5 weeks. Recruiters and hiring managers can expect it to take an average of 5.5 weeks to advertise a job, collect applications and resumes, and begin their interviewing process.

When you think of the Silicon Valley, it's likely that you think about technology. But, you may not realize that tech jobs only accounted for 27% of all hiring demand in San Jose and San Francisco during January. That means 73% of all jobs that were posted in the Silicon Valley are for positions outside of IT. In January, there were more than 112,000 jobs available online in the San Francisco and San Jose areas that weren't IT or programming jobs. Although there was a slight seasonal decline in the end of 2012, this in a 12% year-over-year increase. (IT jobs grew in this area by about 7%.)

Hiring Demand for Professionals not in IT in the Silicon Valley

Source: WANTED Analytics

The most in-demand occupation within the Silicon Valley area (not in IT) was Marketing Managers. More than 6,100 jobs were available last month, an 11% increase compared to January of 2012. (As a note, Marketing Managers are the 2nd most in-demand job in this area, even when you include IT jobs. Only Software Engineers saw more hiring demand in January.) Other in-demand fields were Registered Nurses, Retail Sales Managers, Administrative Assistants, Retail Salespersons, Sales Managers, Accountants, Management Analysts, Industrial Engineers, and Market Research Analysts. 9 of these 10 jobs saw year-over-year growth. Only Industrial Engineers declined in the Silicon Valley, although it was by less than 1%.

Of the above 10 jobs, it's likely that Marketing Managers will be the hardest-to-fill. Marketers are in-demand across the US, so it may not be surprising to hear this. Our Hiring Scale scores these jobs as a 93 in the Silicon Valley, out of a possible 99. In addition, they will be harder than average to fill. The average Hiring Scale score for Marketers across the US is an 89. Other jobs likely to be difficult-to-recruit are Industrial Engineers (scoring an 89) and Sales Managers (scoring an 82.)

One of our Twitter followers requested that we look at IT hiring trends for the Chicago metro area. So today, we thought we would see where the "Windy City" falls in terms of hiring demand and the overall recruiting conditions. Chicago is currently the city with the 4th highest demand for tech talent, after Washington (DC), New York, and San Francisco. At the time of writing, there are more than 10,000 job ads being advertised online by about 2,200 direct employers.

On our Hiring Scale, the national average score is a 79, out of a possible 99 where 99 would denote the most difficult. Chicago is represented by an 83. It's likely that Recruiters in Chicago will spend longer than average sourcing candidates, will experience more competition from other employers also looking to fill IT jobs, and may ultimately see a higher cost-per-hire.

Cloud computing skill sets continue to be in high demand by employers in the US. Today, we wanted to look at the current recruiting conditions, on average across the US. In addition, we want to give you a competitive edge by sharing some of the best and worst places to currently be sourcing this talent.

Across the US, there are currently more than 1,200 employers hiring for cloud computing skills. These job ads remain online for an average of 44 days, or just over 6 weeks. Our Hiring Scale shows that these jobs will be very hard-to-fill, scoring a 90 (out of a possible 99.) Also, the map below shows that most major metro areas are shaded in orange and red, meaning that those locations will be among the hardest to fill. With only a few cities shown in green, there aren't too many places where better conditions are likely to exist.

Hiring Scales for Cloud Computing Skilled Professionals in the United States

Source: WANTED Analytics

Below are the 10 metro areas that are currently likely to have the best experiencing the most difficult conditions for recruiting cloud computing talent. In these areas, there is likely to be fierce competition from employers and staffing firms to attract enough potential candidates and will likely see longer average posting periods. For example, the average posting period in Baltimore is over 7 weeks, a week longer than the national average.

10 Metro Areas with the Most Difficult Conditions for Recruiting Cloud Computing Skills:

Jacksonville, FL

Baltimore-Towson, MD

Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, AR

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA

Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA

Richmond, VA

Manchester-Nashua, NH

Charleston-North Charleston, SC

Columbia, MO

Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC

Below are the 10 locations that are currently likely to have the best conditions for recruiting cloud computing talent. This doesn't necessarily mean that these jobs will be easy-to-fill here, but recruiters are likely to see less competition from other employers. By sourcing candidates from these cities, Recruiters are likely to have larger talent pools to source from and fill job faster than average. For example, the average posting period in Ventura, CA is about 1 week shorter than the national average. Some employers may want to consider sourcing and relocating a new employee if they are able to fill jobs faster and reduce their cost-per-hire. This is a strategy that HR professionals and hiring managers should discuss as plans for finding talent are developed.

IT professionals are in high demand in the US. Today, we thought it would be interesting to look at demand for IT jobs in Canada. Are employers in Canada looking for as many computer programmers and other specialists as employers in the US? In December, there were just over 16,000 online job listing for IT related occupations. This is slightly higher than was seen in December 2011, up about 1%. In December, 82% of the job ads were posted online by employers, whereas staffing firms represented about 18% of the hiring demand.

A recent article on ComputerWorld listed programming and application development as one of the hottest IT skills for 2013 and estimated that 60% of companies plan to hire for these skills in the next 12 months. We decided to look at app development to see what hiring looks like now and emerging trends.

In the past 90 days, there were just over 100,000 available online job ads that required app development skills. Despite growing demand in the beginning of the year, a slowing demand puts this at a modest 2% increase compared to the same 90-day period in 2011.

Hiring Demand for Application Development – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Below are some of the job titles that most commonly require app development.

Java Developer

Software Engineer

.NET Developer

Senior Software Engineer

Senior Java Developer

Project Manager

Web Developer

Programmer

Application Developer

Business Analyst

In the article, one company said they are looking for app developers with experience in Java, J2EE, and .NET. We looked at the most in-demand skills in these job ads and saw that this is in line with many other employers. J2EE is the only skill mentioned that didn't appear on the top 10 list below (it didn't appear on our list until #15.)

Most in-demand skills in application development job ads:

Structured query language (SQL)

Oracle Java

Software development

JavaScript (JS)

Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL)

Extensible markup language (XML)

Project management

Microsoft .NET Framework (.NET)

Hypertext markup language (HTML)

Quality Assurance (QA)

Since application development is a niche tech skill, it's probably not too surprising that Recruiters are likely to find candidates hard to find. On average, job ads for app developing skills remain online for 5.5 weeks. Based on the below map of Hiring Scales™ for this talent, you can see that these positions will be hard-to-fill, with most locations appearing as yellow, orange, or red. This depicts harder-to-fill positions. However, there are a few bright green areas, which show locations where this talent will be less difficult to recruit. Recruiters can look for candidates in these regions and target their job ads to attract potential candidates. Some locations where these jobs will be least difficult to source candidates are Eugene (OR), Mobile (AL), Poughkeepsie (NY), Monroe (LA), and Evansville, (IN). Lower demand from employers in these cities is likely to cause less competition, a shorter time-to-fill, and easier overall recruiting conditions.

Over the past 2 years, companies have invested heavily in cloud-based applications, due to cost savings in the current economy and overall process improvement. In a recent survey about cloud computing by Forbes and KPMG, 81% of the responding organizations said they have already moved business activities to the cloud and expect to continue with this trend in 2012. Hiring demand has reflected this trend, with a consistent rise in online job ads since 2010 and more than 2,600 job postings over the past 30 days. Although this is slightly down from the 4-year high in May, demand in over this period has increased 32% when compared to the same time period in 2010 and 312% versus 2009. With many organizations planning to continue moving to the cloud next year – some reporting plans to move as much as one-fifth of their IT budget – it is likely that hiring will also continue into 2012.

Source: WANTED Analytics

IT and Marketing professionals are most commonly required to have these skills. We looked at average salary ranges for these 2 occupations, both with cloud computing skills and the occupation average, in the cities with the highest demand. Although professionals with cloud skills don't necessarily earn higher salaries than the occupation average, the salary ranges for cloud skills fall on the higher end of the range. For both occupations, the average salary ranges in San Francisco and San Jose are the highest.

The last time we reported on cloud computing skills, the talent pool consisted of 10 potential candidates. From the above hiring demand graph, you can see that demand has decreased slightly, whereas the talent pool has stayed relatively even. Now, there are about 14 candidates in the US with cloud skills per job opening. Of the above 5 locations, our Hiring Scale™ shows that Recruiters in Washington, DC are likely to experience the most difficult conditions with 10 potential candidates per advertised job. Recruiters here are likely to spend more time and resources filling open positions.

Locations with the easiest recruiting conditions in the US for cloud computing skills are Tulsa (OK), Kansas City (MO), Cleveland (OH), Worcester (MA), and Manchester (NH), where they average 33 potential candidates per job opening.

Google+ isn't even 3 months old but, with over 25 million members, companies are already looking to recruit talent to work on this new social media platform. There are currently 120 unique job ads online that specify Google+ skills. The majority are being advertised by staffing firms, however there are 8 direct employers with available ads. With Google+ business pages projected to be released later this year, it is likely that this number will begin to grow.

Companies Currently Hiring for Google+ Skills

Not surprisingly, many of the job ads are for Computer Programming and IT or Marketing related occupations. The 3 most common job titles were:

Senior Java Web Consultant with Search

Search Analyst

Internal Communications Manager

The Washington, DC metro area leads the nation in job ad volume for IT, but Hiring Demand in that location has shown no improvement over the same period last year and is 19 percent lower than its post-recession peak in September 2010. With the exception of the Washington, DC and Baltimore metro areas, all of the Top 25 locations show double-digit growth over February 2010. Eight metro areas show Hiring Demand growth greater than 50 percent: San Jose, Atlanta, San Diego, Denver, Detroit, Columbus, Portland, and Cleveland.

Computer Systems Analysts show the greatest Hiring Demand by job ad volume, with nearly 21,000 ads posted by direct employers in February. This is a 22 percent increase over the same period last year.

After 12 months of steady growth, hiring in the Information Technology sector went flat in Q2. The S&P Technology index fell by 8% during the second quarter of 2010 as a result (NYSE:XLK).

The following graphs the number of new online job postings for IT workers in the United States, monthly:

Source: WANTED Analytics - Hiring Demand Dashboard

15 months ago, there were 72,000 paid-for online job postings for IT workers in the United States (we exclude free sites like Craig's List). Online job postings for IT workers grew by about 2.4% a month on average for a full year – the equivalent of an additional 2,350 new job postings a month – before settling at the 102,000 mark in March. Since then, however, hiring for new IT workers has gone flat, and even fell by 1.7% in April.

Overall hiring is still half its pre-recession levels.

Stock markets have taken notice: since hitting a 52-week high of 24.08 in April, the S&P 500 Technology sector SPDR ETF sits at 22.19 today, a 7.8% drop (NYSE:XLK). This is a better result than a month ago (July 2), when the sector index stood at 20.29, a 15.7% drop relative to the April high. The pick-up in the sector index over the past month has been matched by a slight increase in June IT Hiring.

The following graph shows the number of online job postings for IT workers in the United States (using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupational Classification system for "Computer Specialists") and the evolution of the S&P Technology index (NYSE:XLK).

Source: WANTED Analytics, Google Finance

More important, however, is the analysis of the yearly returns of the S&P Technology index and the yearly growth in Hiring Demand: equity analysts care about the future returns of an index, and yearly growth rate in Hiring Demand appropriately captures evolving temporal dynamics as well as having the advantage of being free of seasonal variation. Notice how the stock market index picked up about 6 months before hiring did – stock markets are usually forward-looking by about six months. Notice too how the slow-down in the Hiring Demand growth rate in February has caused returns of the S&P Technology sector index to lose steam. In other words, the stock markets may have gotten a little ahead of themselves, and the slow-down in hiring meant that aggressive forward-looking expectations were no longer sustainable.

Online job ads for IT professionals by Silicon Valley companies ended the month of August up 15 percent from their three-year low in mid-April. Available ads reached a new 2009 high in mid-August; however, the last week of August saw a five percent drop from the prior week that erased the August gains. Total Hiring Demand remains 56 percent below its three-year high in October 2007.

Hiring Demand for IT Occupations slipped 5.7% on a year-over-year basis compared to last month. Nine of the ten IT occupations classified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed decline.

Compared to last year, Hiring Demand for IT occupations is down 35.7%. It was down only 30% last month. "Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts", which had been relatively spared so far, saw the largest relative drop in Hiring Demand, falling 9% to -18.2% compared to a year ago.

Full-size chart available on Jobs. Trends. Insight.

Only "Computer and Information Research Scientists" have shown growth. However, IT research scientists represent less than 1% of all IT workers. Since this is a small and highly specialized group, Hiring Demand for these workers has usually displayed more variance.

The bright news is that despite this slight setback, Hiring Demand has been steady after completely missing the usual January "rebound in hiring". Even though Hiring Demand is half of what it was in January 2008, it has at least stabilized.
