Many students are making one last push to find an internship around this time of year as they head back to college, so we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the skills that employers most commonly require.  Just as with other types of employees, Microsoft Office and related programs are in high demand. With tech being a hot career right now, it's not too surprising to see several technology and programming skills listed here. Anything stand out in your eyes?

Demand for Interns Continues to Grow

As students start returning from their Spring Breaks, many will begin looking for summer internships (if they have not already started). Last month, there were approximately19,000 new online job advertisements placed for internships, a 55% increase versus February 2011.

There top 5 areas for internships include: Public Relations (1,306 online job ads), Market Research (850), Industrial Engineering (661), Computer Software Engineers (535), and Management Analysts (525).

Industries with the highest volume of job ads included Engineering Services, Hospitals, Colleges, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, and Administrative Management.  Of these 5 industries with the highest hiring demand, 4 experienced year-over-year increases.

Metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads included New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Francisco.  Of these 5 locations with the highest hiring demand, 4 cities experienced year-over-year increases. Only Washington, DC saw a decline. The top 10 metro areas, with year-over-year growth, are listed below.

Hiring Demand for Interns Grows 24 Percent

Hiring for interns was strong in 2011. Recruiters placed online job ads for more than 180,000 internships last year – 28% more than during 2010. To see what demand has looked like recently, we took a look at the online ads over the past 90 days.

In the past 90 days, about 42,000 internship jobs have been advertised online. This represents a 24% increase compared to the same 90-day period last year. Some of the companies witht he highest volume of ads during this time period were Rent-A-Center, IBM, Citigroup, Deloitte, URS Corporation, Intel, Kaiser Permanente, Capital One, and Jacobs Technology.

The 20 locations with the highest volume of internship opportunities are below. 18 saw increases, with just San Jose and Milwaukee seeing year-over-year declines. Internships were advertised most in the New York metro area. In this area, more than 3,000 internships were listed online over the past 90 days – a 15% increase compared to last year. Other high demanding cities included Washington (DC), Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco.

The 10 fields with the most job ads for interns are below. Public Relations interns are the most in-demand, with more than 2,800 internships advertised over this 90-day period. In fact, interns account for 23% of all PR jobs posted online during the last 90 days. Technology internships were also highly advertised. Of these top 10 fields, half are for various tech-related fields. Software Engineers (Applications), Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts, Computer Support Specialists, and Computer Programmers all appeared in the below list.

Volume of Job Ads for Interns Still Growing

As unemployment dipped slightly during October to 9%, hiring demand for interns remains strong. Over the past 30 days, more than 16,200 jobs have been advertised online for interns, up 9% from 2010 and 90% from 2 years ago.

The most commonly advertised job titles for internships are below and include a variety of fields. Marketing and Public Relations related interns saw the highest demand over the past 30 days, with ads for PR specialists up more than 150% versus the same time last year. IT and Engineering internships also had high volumes of job ads. There were more than 3,000 ads for all tech-related occupations and over 2,700 for various types of Engineering positions.

Employers Increase Demand for Interns by 23% in August

Despite nationwide hiring being reported as unchanged by the BLS last week, the demand for interns has been strong over the past months. In August, there were more than 12,000 internships advertised online by direct employers.  The volume of job ads for interns has increased 18% from July to August and 23% compared to one year ago.

Of the ten locations that saw the highest demand for interns, 9 saw increases.  Washington, DC experienced a 31% decline, despite advertising the most ads for internships last month. Direct employers in New York also placed more than 1,000 new online ads for interns at a 13% increase.

Public Relations Specialists were the most commonly advertised internship position by employers in August.  The volume of job ads surged 88% from to August 2010, with more than 1,200 advertised. This is more than twice the the demand of Registered Nurses, the second most common internship advertised. Of the 10 occupations with the most ads for interns, only Sales Agents of Financial Services saw year-over-year declines. The five direct employers that placed the most ads for interns during August were IBM, Citigroup, Target, Kaiser Permanente and AT&T.

Some of the most common job titles used in the job ads for PR Specialists included Marketing Intern, Communications Intern, Public Relations Intern, Marketing Communications Intern, and Social Media Intern. Common titles for other highly demanded occupations are below.
