Where is the Green? Hiring Still Beats Pre-Recession Demand

By Abby Lombardi on October 18, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators, Labor Market Dynamics.

A recent study by The Brookings Institution and the Pew Center for the States, and published by the Economic Policy Institute, revealed some interesting employment trends about green jobs. Two of these findings showed that greener industries grow faster than the overall economy and states with more green jobs have fared better in this economy. With this recent study, we wanted to take a look at recent hiring demand for green jobs to see if they are growing and where they are most in-demand.

In September, there were about 92,000 job ads available online for "green" positions at any level. This is a slight decline from the four-year high in March 2012, but still well above pre-recession hiring demand.

Hiring for Shale Mining Jobs Is Growing Steadily

By Abby Lombardi on February 8, 2012 in Engineering, Oil Gas and Mining.

A report released in December 2011 reported that shale mining supported 600,000 workers in the US and, if 'fracking' continues, is projected to grow to 870,000 by 2015. While this is a controversial topic for many, we wanted to take a look at how many jobs have been recently advertised that are related to shale gas extraction.

Over the past 90 days, there have been just over 1,000 jobs advertised online that included the terms "shale" or "frack." This is a 70% increase compared to the same 90-day period one year ago. There were about 5,600 total jobs posted online in the oil, quarrying, and mining sector over the past 90 days, meaning that shale-related jobs account for about 18% of all jobs in this sector.

Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Engineering Managers, and Industrial Engineers were also among the top 10 most demanded jobs. Other high-demand jobs in this 90-day period were Geo-scientists, Truck Drivers, First-line Managers of Extraction or Production workers, and Operations Managers finished off the 10 most advertised jobs. All of these occupations saw increases in ad volume, with Environmental Engineers seeing the most growth – over 400%. Below are some of the most commonly advertised job titles:

  1. Reservoir Engineer
  2. Geologist
  3. Production Engineer
  4. Drilling Engineer
  5. Petrophysicist (or Senior Petrophysicist)
  6. Completions Engineer
  7. Geophysicist
  8. Document Control Lead
  9. Petroleum Engineer
  10. Geoscience Advisor Exploration – Unconventional

The 5 cities with the most hiring for shale workers over this 90-day time period were Houston, Pittsburgh, Denver, Dallas, and Philadelphia. 4 of these 5 cities saw year-over-year increases in job listings. Only Dallas saw a decline when compared to the same period last year.

In the past 90 days, the most job ads were posted for Computer Systems Analysts. Recruiters posted more than 100,000 online at a 14% increase from 2010. Software Engineers were close behind with more than 77,000 job ads. Applications Software Engineers accounted for more than 65,000 of the job ads posted online, while Systems Software Engineers accounted for the remaining 12,000. Civil Engineers, Environmental Scientists and Engineering Technicians, Biomedical Engineers, Hydrologists, and Meteorologists saw declining hiring demand over the past 90 days.

Occupation Volume of Job Ads – 90 Days % Change vs. 2010
Computer Systems Analysts 100,763 +14.7%
Computer Software Engineers 77,512 +4.0%

Hydrologists 62 -53.7%
Meteorologists 60 -24.1%

According to our Hiring Scale™, Hydrologists are likely to be the easiest job to fill of the above 10 careers. Nationwide, there are about 30 potential candidates in the workforce for every job ad currently online. In comparison, the occupation on this list that is likely to be the most difficult job to fill is Computer Systems Analysts, which only have 5 potential candidates for every job ad online. Some locations will see more difficult recruiting conditions, based on the local demand by employers and talent supply. For example, Cleveland, Ohio falls below the national average with about 2.7 potential candidates for each job opening.

The Hiring Scale also showed that the easiest placed to recruit a Computer Systems Analyst is Poughkeepsie (New York), Eugene (Oregon), Binghamton (New York), South Bend (Indiana), and Prescott (Arizona). In these areas, the talent pool consists of up to 50 potential candidates per job opening. Recruiters that are able to source candidates from these areas are likely to reduce their time-to-fill. In fact, ads in Poughkeepsie are online for an average 38 days which is shorter than the nationwide average.
