New Trends Emerging in Hiring for Social Media Skills

By Abby Lombardi on July 24, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators, Occupations.

Hiring for social media and social networking skills is still a hot topic. With new social networking sites being started and new ways to leverage these sites for businesses to connect with customers, hiring demand isn't likely to stop. When we started looking at job ads for social media skills, we weren't surprised by the number of job ads or where the jobs were located. What did surprise us, however, are the types of job requiring them and the changes over the past few months.

We'll start off with a review of hiring last month. In June 2012, more than 59,000 job ads were available online that included social media requirements. This is a 65% year-over-year increase in ad volume compared to June 2011. The five cities with the most available ads during June 2012 were New York, Los Angeles, Washington (DC), San Francisco, and Chicago. All 5 of these areas saw year-over-year increases and combine represent about one-third of all social media hiring demand in June.

When we started looking at the occupations and job titles that commonly include social media and social networking in their job description or skill requirements, we found some new trends. In the past, we've mostly seen social media required in public relations, marketing, and tech positions. These 3 fields are still the most likely to see social media and social networking skills. However, we are seeing fast growth in sales occupations. Hiring demand for sales representatives with social media skills almost doubled in June 2012 compared to June 2011 – there are 99% more job ads online than last year. The specific job titles that commonly require this skill set reflect this trend too. Sales and customer service related titles represent more than half the list with 6 unique job titles being advertised. It is also interesting that we see the debut of a social media advertising sales job titles on this list.

Here are the 10 most commonly advertised job titles that require social media and social networking skills in candidates:

  1. Lands End Shop Sales Consultant
  2. Lands End Sales Leader
  3. Merchandising Specialist
  4. Sales Executive to Sell Facebook Presence Lead Generation to Medium Sized Businesses
  5. Marketing Manager
  6. Retail Wireless Customer Service Associate
  7. Social Media Marketing Manager
  8. Lands End Sales Coordinator
  9. Real Estate Sales Representative
  10. Social Media Manager

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that regardless of which occupation or job title you require these skills for, recruiting candidates is likely to be difficult. With increasing demand, Recruiters will see more competition to attract potential candidates and a longer time-to-fill for oped positions. The Hiring Scale shows that Recruiters in San Francisco are currently experiencing some of the greatest difficulties in sourcing applicants. In comparison, Winston-Salem, NC is one of the easiest locations to find these skilled professionals. With an average posting period of just 33 days (or 4.7 weeks), Recruiters in Winston-Salem are likely to fill social media jobs up to one week faster than the national average.

Growth of Retirement-Eligible Workers Brings Added Hiring for Financial Advisers

By Abby Lombardi on May 2, 2012 in Accounting/Finance, Business/Finance.

A recent Investment News article talked about a looming shortage of financial advisers caused by millions of "baby-boomers" that are planning their retirement and also due to the fact that there are fewer younger financial advisers entering the workforce. We wanted to take a look at how hard-to-fill these jobs are and ways that recruiters may be able to fill them faster.

First, we'll quickly review hiring demand for this occupation. In March, there were more than 3,000 jobs posted online for financial advisers – representing a 4-year high in demand for this occupation and a 110% year-over-year increase in hiring demand. Employers in the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington (DC), and Boston metropolitan areas posted the highest volume of job ads for financial advisers. All of these 5 metro areas saw increases in hiring demand; however, Boston saw the highest year-over-year growth at 240% and outpacing the national average.

Hiring Demand for Financial Advisers – 4 Year Hiring Trend

The skills that are most commonly required in job ads for financial advisers are:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Microsoft PowerPoint
  3. Microsoft Excel
  4. Financial modeling
  5. Hyperion
  6. Microsoft Word
  7. Portfolio management
  8. Estate planning
  9. Microsoft Access
  10. Asset allocation

The most commonly recruited certifications are:

  1. General Securities Representative Exam (Series 7)
  2. Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
  3. Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  4. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  5. Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC)
  6. Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)
  7. Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  8. Securities license (NASD Series 7)
  9. Chartered Investment Counselor
  10. Accredited Senior Appraiser

Since the demand for financial advisers is increasing, there is more competition to attract this talent by employers, therefore making the jobs harder to fill. Our Hiring Scale™ showed us that the best markets for sourcing financial advisers are Durham (North Carolina), Winston-Salem (North Carolina), Rochester (New York), Syracuse (New York), and Pensacola (Florida). In these cities, hiring demand remains low, while the available talent pool is larger. Recruiters that are able to post job ads in these cities are likely to spend less time sourcing candidates and see less competition for this talent. In fact, job ads in these areas remain online for as few as 32 days – or about 4.5 weeks. In comparison, the national average is 6 weeks – 1.5 weeks longer than in some of these areas.

5 Markets that Financial Advisers are Easy-to-Fill

Best Cities for Listing Financial Adviser Job Ads

Recruiters that find financial adviser jobs to be hard-to-fill should consider targeting candidates from the above cities. You will have more candidates to source from, less competition for the talent, and are likely to fill jobs faster.

Rising Gas Prices Haven't Stopped Hiring Demand for Truck Drivers

By Abby Lombardi on April 27, 2012 in Truck Drivers.

Even though gas prices average $3.84 per gallon across the US, we noticed that hiring demand for truck drivers hasn't been deterred. In March, almost 41,000 jobs were advertised online for this occupation, a 33% increase compared to March of 2011. This also marks a new 4-year high in demand for truck drivers – far exceeding pre-recession volumes. Recruiters in Chicago placed the highest volume of job ads for drivers during March, growing more than 30% over the past year in this one city. Other locations with the highest number of job ads for truck drivers during March included Dallas, New York, Houston, and Philadelphia.

Hiring Demand for Truck Drivers – 4 Year Hiring Trend

With the volume of job ads growing, many recruiters are likely to find truck driver job openings moderately hard-to-fill. The volume of job ads continues to increase, yet the number of potential candidates in this field is not growing as the same pace. Some locations, however, have seen more demand on a smaller local talent pool and are likely to find them harder than average to fill. Our Hiring Scale™ shows that some of the cities that will experience some of the most difficulties with sourcing enough candidates are Lawrence (KS), Santa Fe (NM), Muncie (IN), Owensboro (KY), and Macon (GA.) In these areas, recruiters are likely to experience a longer time-to-fill and more competition to attract candidates. For example, job ads for drivers in Santa Fe, New Mexico remain online for an average of 55 days, or just shorter than 8 weeks. This is one of the longest posting periods in the United States.

However, our Hiring Scale is also able to show us some of the best locations to source this talent:

  • Morristown, Tennessee
  • Dalton, Georgia
  • Michigan City, Indiana
  • Columbus, Indiana
  • Gainesville, GA

In these areas, there is less competition to source from available talent pool, meaning that filling job openings is likely to happen more easily and faster. For example, there are only 2 employers currently advertising job openings for truck drivers in Morristown, TN. By sourcing candidates from this area, you may be able to reduce your time-to-fill since you'll have more candidates and fewer recruiters to compete against for qualified candidates.

Hiring for Accountants Surges in Final Days of Tax Prep

By Abby Lombardi on April 16, 2012 in Accounting/Finance, Business/Finance.

With tax season in the final hours, we wanted to take one more look at hiring for Accountants and Auditors to see if there was a final push in job ads for this occupation. There was quite a significant increase in hiring for this occupation in March. More than 29,000 job ads were posted online for Accountants and Auditors, a 46% increase over March of last year. This is the highest volume of jobs posted online since October 2008, when the recession was beginning.

Hiring Demand for Accountants and Auditors – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Of the 5 cities below with the highest volume of ads, all saw year-over-year increases. Not too surprisingly, New York saw the highest volume of job ads for Accountants and Auditors during March. More than 3,000 ads were posted online last month at a 54% increase compared to March of 2011. However, employers in Chicago saw the greatest growth since last year, with 57% more jobs this March than were seen last year.

Here are some of the most commonly advertised skills that are listed in job ads for Accountants and Auditors:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Internal Audit
  3. Microsoft Excel
  4. Microsoft PowerPoint
  5. Tax planning
  6. Cost accounting
  7. Hyperion
  8. Financial accounting
  9. Microsoft Word
  10. Enterprise Resource Planning Software (ERP)

With the steady increase in hiring over the past few months, it is likely that Recruiters will find accounting jobs moderately hard-to-fill. Locations that are experiencing higher than average growth in demand will see more competition and a longer time-to-fill. For example, our Hiring Scale shows that recruiters in Chicago currently keep job ads online for 6.5 weeks. Our Hiring Scale also shows some of the locations.  Amarillo (Texas) is currently experiencing one of the shortest posting periods for accounting job ads – about 3.8 weeks. Recruiters in Chicago that are struggling to fill job openings may consider advertising their job openings in Amarillo and relocating talent.

Hiring by Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies Almost Doubles in First Months of 2012

By Abby Lombardi on March 8, 2012 in Energy, Engineering, Oil Gas and Mining.

The oil, gas, and mining industries in the United States have seen vast fluctuations in hiring over the past several years. Alternative energy sources are becoming more readily available. However, they are far from the norm at this point as is reflected by rising fuel prices. We thought we would take a look at hiring in the oil and gas mining industries to see what it looks like now.

In the past 60 days, more than 4,800 jobs were posted online in these mining industries.  This represents a 97% increase from last year – almost double the number of job ads in the first 2 months of 2011. The employers with the most online job ads during this period were Baker-Hughes, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, and Freeport-McMoRan.

Hiring Demand by Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies – 4 Year Hiring Trend

The most demanded occupation by oil, gas, and mining companies during this time period was Petroleum Engineer. Over the past 60 days, more than 300 online job ads were posted for this position, a 142% increase compared to last year. Other high-demand jobs included Production Managers, Industrial Engineers, Accountants, Truck Drivers, Mechanic Managers, Computer Support Specialists, Computer Systems Analysts, Geo-scientists, and General Maintenance and Repair Workers. All 10 of these occupations have experienced at least double-digit year-over-year increases in hiring demand, ranging from 58% growth (Truck Drivers) to 289% (Maintenance and Repair Workers.) Does the rise in demand for any of these jobs surprise you?

Source: WANTED Analytics

The 5 locations with the most job ads in these industries are below. Recruiters placed the most ads for job openings located within the Houston metro area, with more than 1,000 listings in the past 60 days. Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Denver (Colorado), Dallas (Texas), and Tulsa (Oklahoma) rounded out the list of the cities with the highest hiring demand for these jobs. Dallas was one of few US cities that saw a year-over-year decline.

Source: WANTED Analytics

According to our Hiring Scale™, Recruiters in these industries are likely to find most jobs easy-to-fill. However, conditions will vary by location and specific occupation. For example, Petroleum Engineers – the most demanded job by oil and gas companies over the past 60 days – are likely to be moderately difficult-to-fill. The location currently experiencing one of the most difficult recruiting conditions is Odessa, Texas. Here, demand may soon out-pace the local talent supply. Job ads in the Odessa area remain online for 64 days – more than 9 weeks or 2 months. On the other hand, if you are a Petroleum Engineer looking for work in Odessa, it is likely that Recruiters will compete heavily for your skills, making work moderately easy-to-find.

In comparison, our Hiring Scale also shows that Recruiters looking to fill this job in New Orleans (Louisiana) are likely to see some of the easiest recruiting conditions and shortest time-to-fill, since there are larger talent pools and fewer employers competing for these potential candidates. Other locations that are likely to find Petroleum engineers easier to fill are Dallas, Oklahoma City, Corpus Christi (Texas), and Houston. In these locations, job ads may be online for as few as 36 days – or just over 5 weeks. That's almost half the time it takes to fill a job in Odessa. Consequently, if you are a Petroleum Engineer in any of these areas, it is likely that work will be harder to find and possibly take longer than average.

Getting Paid to Play: Hiring for Video Game Developers Grows

By Abby Lombardi on March 7, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Information Technology - XLK.

2011 was a big year in the video gaming industry. Sales records were shattered and, not surprisingly, hiring demand for these specialized skills is increasing. There is a strong market for this talent, with more than 1,100 job ads were posted online for Video Game Programmers and Developers in the past 60 days. Overall, the volume of job ads over the past 60 days increased 40% compared to the same 60-day period in 2011, and approximately 65% versus 2010.

Hiring Demand for Video Game Developers – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Some of the most commonly advertised job titles for game developers were:

  1. Video Gaming User Specialist
  2. Software Engineer
  3. Flash Developer
  4. Web Developer
  5. Video Game Tester
  6. Technical Support Broadband Gaming Program
  7. Game Designer (or Developer)
  8. Flash Developer
  9. QA Tester
  10. Video Game Metaverse

Although technology jobs most often require gaming knowledge, other fields that increasingly require experience in the video gaming industry include Marketing Managers, Merchandise Displayers, Market Research Analysts, Graphics Designers, and Retail Salespersons.

The metropolitan area with the highest volume of job listings for Video Game Developers during the past 60 days was Seattle (Washington).  More than 200 job ads for game developers were posted in this area, a 40% increase compared to the same 60-day period in 2011. Other cities with the highest hiring demand were Los Angeles (California), New York (New York), San Francisco (California), and San Jose (California). While employers in Seattle placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool, the highest year-over-year growth was seen in New York at more than 400%. Los Angles, San Francisco, and San Jose all saw a decline in hiring demand compared to the same 60-day period in 2011.

Companies sourcing candidates with video game development experience are likely to find openings difficult-to-recruit. According to the Hiring Scale™, companies in San Francisco are currently experiencing more difficult conditions when recruiting candidates with this skill set. Despite seeing a decline in hiring demand, the local talent pool of qualified professionals is smaller than average. Employers in this area are likely to compete heavily to attract qualified talent and experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States.

In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Madison (Wisconsin), Denver (Colorado), and Salt Lake City (Utah). These areas are likely to fill job openings faster than the rest of the United States, since hiring demand is low compared to the available talent supply.

Easiest Places to Source Social Media Skills

By Abby Lombardi on February 17, 2012 in Advertising/Marketing, Recruiters, Sales.

Yesterday, we posted that hiring demand for social media skills reached an all time high in January. With increased demand, many Recruiters struggle to find qualified talent with this skill set. So, we thought we'd provide some of the places with the largest talent pools and are currently the best markets to source social media skills in. We looked at hiring conditions for the 4 of the fields with high demand for social media skills: Marketing, Public Relations, Recruiting, and Sales.

As you can see by the below Hiring Scale™ snapshots, each national average for each occupation will experience varying degrees of difficulty. This depends on the hiring demand for those jobs and the talent supply of qualified potential candidates in the workforce. In these locations, Recruiters are likely to see more candidates per job opening, less competition with other employers, a shorter time-to-fill for open jobs, and a lower cost-per-hire. Recruiters that have hard-to-fill social media job openings (or are sourcing for several jobs) may find it beneficial to post ads and source candidates in these cities to expand their talent pools.

Consequently if you have social media skills and are looking to find work, these are likely to be the hardest places for you to find a job. Since there is lower hiring demand and a higher talent supply, you are likely to compete with more candidates for fewer jobs in these cities.

Tax Season is Here – Have you Filled all your Company's Accountant Job Openings?

By Abby Lombardi on January 31, 2012 in Accounting/Finance.

Tax season is upon us and that means that this is prime time for companies to recruit Accountants. Many companies have already begun sourcing for Accounting positions needed during this busy time of the year. Hiring during the last 3 months of 2011 was up 33%. Since the beginning of January, more than 23,000 job ads have been posted online for Accountants and Auditors, a 13% increase compared to the same time period in 2011. If you haven't filled all the open accounting jobs at your company, it's likely you will find these jobs hard-to-fill now.

We found more than 7,900 companies currently advertising Accounting job openings across the US. Some companies – especially many the big accounting firms – are recruiting in large volume. For example, Deloitte, KPMG, and Ernst & Young are currently advertising the most job ads of any employer in the US. They each have more than 1,000 open accounting jobs being advertised online and are likely to compete heavily to fill all their openings.

Heat Map of High Hiring Demand for Accountants

Heat map of Hiring Demand for Accountants

Source: WANTED Analytics

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that it will be moderately difficult to recruit Accountants across the United States. On average, there are about 11 potential candidates in the nationwide workforce for every job opening advertised online. In areas where there is higher demand, recruiting will be even more difficult. Chicago, for example, has seen some of the fastest growing demand over the past year. During October, November, and December of 2011, Recruiters placed almost 3,700 unique job listings for Accountants, representing a 39% increase compared to the same 3 months in 2010. Although hiring demand has grown, the local talent pool has not grown at the same pace. There are just 7 potential candidates in the Chicago workforce for every Accounting job being advertised online. It's likely that Recruiters will not only compete more for talent, but also see a longer time-to-fill for these open positions.

Hiring Scale for Accountants in Chicago, Illinois versus Nationally

If you are still sourcing for open jobs, we suggest you look in locations with easier recruiting conditions. Our Hiring Scale also shows us the easiest place to recruit Accountants is currently in Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas. Here, the competition is low – only 4 employers are currently hiring – and the talent supply is high. Recruiters that are able to source candidates from this area are likely to reduce their time-to-fill by as many as 11 days. The average posting period in Chicago is 45 days, while the average in Beaumont is 34 days.

Which Job is Easier to Recruit: OR Nurses, ER Nurses, or ICU Nurses?

By Abby Lombardi on January 27, 2012 in Health Care.

Healthcare workers are in demand across the United States, and none have seen more job ads than Registered Nurses. Nursing jobs have been a hard-to-fill position for most Recruiters, due to the hiring demand growing faster than the related workforce. However, there are different types of nurses and many are seeing varying degrees of difficulty and demand. We looked at 3 types of commonly advertised nurses and the difficulty to fill each: Operating Room Nurses, Emergency Room Nurses, and Intensive Care Nurses.

Of these 3 types of nurses, Emergency Room (ER) Nurses are likely to be the easiest to fill across the US. There are more than 250 healthcare employers currently recruiting for ER Nurses – some with as many as 140 unique job openings currently advertised across the country. Recruiters that are sourcing for this many open positions are likely to see even more competition, since they will be competing with not only other companies to attract potential candidates, but also against themselves as they need to source for multiple openings at the same time. Companies placed the most job ads for nurses in New York and this area is likely to see a longer time-to-fill and higher cost-per-hire, falling below national averages.

Hiring Scale for ER Nurses – New York, NY vs. Nationally

Source: WANTED Analytics

On the other hand, Operating Room (OR) Nurses are likely to more difficult to recruit across the US. Competition for OR Nurses is much greater. There are more than 700 employers currently recruiting for OR Nurses. The US Air Force is currently advertising the most openings of any company nationwide with more than 450 job ads. Again, we looked at conditions in New York. This time, we see that Recruiters in this area are likely to experience comparable conditions to the national average.

Intensive Care (ICU) Nurses, in comparison, fall somewhat in between OR and ER Nurses. There are about 400 companies currently advertising job openings for ICU Nurses.
