Is Houston a Hot Spot for Engineers?

By Abby Lombardi on September 4, 2012 in Engineering.

Engineers have seen inconsistent hiring demand over the past few years, yet as one of the STEM fields, seem to always bounce back with increased volumes of job ads. The past few months we have started to see a decline in the number of available positions – this is often predicted to be "seasonal" since hiring historically has slowed during the last half of the year. While demand may be dropping nationwide, there are a few places that are actually still growing at a very fast pace. We thought we'd take a look at one of these places – Houston, Texas – and how recruiters in this area may be affected by growing demand.

While the nationwide hiring demand for engineers has declined by almost 10% since March 2012, demand in the Houston metro area has grown by 11%. It can also be noted that Houston has seen the highest demand for engineers of any US city every month since February, when it overtook Los Angeles as the city with the most online engineering job ads. While demand dropped in the middle of the recession, it has steadily and quickly grown and is now higher than pre-recession demand.

So what kinds of Engineers are companies in Houston looking for? The 10 most in-demand engineering job titles in this area are:

  1. Mechanical Engineer
  2. Project Engineer
  3. Electrical Engineer
  4. Process Engineer
  5. Engineer
  6. Manufacturing Engineer
  7. Reservoir Engineer
  8. Senior Process Engineer
  9. Quality Engineer
  10. Senior Mechanical Engineer

Also, here are the 5 skills that are most commonly included in engineering job ads in the Houston metro area:

  1. Project management
  2. Microsoft Office
  3. Quality Assurance (QA)
  4. Autodesk AutoCAD
  5. Microsoft PowerPoint

Fast growing demand for Engineers in Houston has caused recruiting conditions to become more difficult. Our Hiring Scale shows that jobs will be harder to fill than in most other cities nationwide and are likely to take about 6.5 weeks to fill in Houston. However, there are some areas near Houston that are currently experiencing better recruiting conditions and may be a source of additional candidates. Some of these cities include Houma, Louisiana and both Austin and Dallas, Texas. By targeting job ads in these areas and sourcing potential candidates, employers in Houston will see less competition from other companies to attract talent, larger candidate pools to source from, and are likely to shorten the time it takes to fill an open job. For example, it takes just 5 weeks on average to fill an engineering job in Houma, LA. While an employer in Houston may need to relocate a candidate, this may be a better option since the job will be filled more than 1 week faster.

Customers First: CRM Hiring Demand Increasing

By Abby Lombardi on August 8, 2012 in Advertising/Marketing, Computer/Math/IT, Occupations, Sales.

Customer relationship management (or CRM) continues to be one of the most in-demand skills in job ads in the US. During July, more than 58,000 job ads were available online that required CRM skills, growing 22% since July 2011 and about 56% over the past two years. Does this indicate that organizations are building and using more robust CRM systems to track communications both offline and online, in addition to providing excellent customer service?

Technical, sales, and marketing occupations leading demand. It isn't too surprising that these 3 fields most commonly need CRM skills – technical jobs are likely building, programming, and customizing CRM software, where as sales and marketing positions are likely using the program to track and monitor customer service. Positions with the highest demand for CRM in July were Computer Systems Analysts, Computer and Information Systems Managers, Marketing Managers, and Sales Managers.

In addition to customer service skills, the other 5 most commonly required skills in these jobs include:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Microsoft PowerPoint
  3. Adobe LifeCycle ES
  4. Business development
  5. Project management

As hiring demand continues, the limited talent supply of potential candidates that have CRM knowledge or experience will create challenges for employers. According to our Hiring Scale™, Recruiters across the United States spend an average of 6 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for these positions. The heat map below shows Hiring Scale difficulties across the US. You can see that most locations are yellow, orange, and red, meaning that they will be more difficult to recruit.

Recruiters in Washington, DC are currently experiencing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions – as pointed out in the above heat map. Fierce competition has emerged as more employers are looking to fill jobs in this area than the local talent supply can support. Employers in the DC metro area are likely to experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States. In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Dalton (Georgia), Olympia (Washington), and Scranton (Pennsylvania). Lower hiring demand in these areas, coupled with larger talent supply, means that Recruiters are likely to fill job openings in as few as 4 weeks.

Hiring Trends Up in Los Angeles Metro Area

By Abby Lombardi on June 15, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

We've noticed that online job ads for Los Angeles has been trending up recently. So, we wanted to take a deeper look at which jobs are most in demand and if Recruiters are likely to find it difficult to source candidates in this area. In May, more than 186,000 job ads were posted online and represented a 9% year-over-year increase compared to May of 2011. In addition, this represents a new 4-year high in demand for this metro area.

The occupations with the most job ads in Los Angeles during May are below. Registered Nurses saw the most job ads, followed by Web Developers and Retail Salespersons. Of the below 10 positions, 7 experienced year over year increases in hiring demand. However, Web Developers, Retail Salespersons, and Computer Systems Analysts saw declining volumes of job ads when compared to May of 2011.

In addition, we looked at the tools, technologies, and certifications that are most commonly required in online ads for jobs located in Los Angeles. Since Registered Nurses were the most demanded occupation in Los Angeles last month, it's not too surprising that 4 out of 5 of the certifications listed below are healthcare related.

5 Skills in Demand In Los Angeles 5 Certifications in Demand in Los Angeles
  • Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Project management
  • Time management
  • Business development
  • Certified Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The level of difficulty to source candidates in this area will vary widely depending on the occupation's demand and talent supply in the local area. Not too surprisingly, our Hiring Scale™ shows that the harder to fill jobs in Los Angeles are technology and healthcare related. Both of these fields are in high demand across the US and are difficult to recruit nationwide. In Los Angeles, Software Engineers and Web Developers are likely to be harder to fill than most other occupations. Currently there aren't enough candidates in the local talent pool to meet the demand, meaning there is likely to be heavy competition among employers and a longer time-to-fill. In fact, the average posting period for these 2 occupations is about 6 weeks. Among the jobs with shorter posting periods are Executive Secretaries and Administrative Assistants, which job ads remain online for an average of 34 days – or just less than 5 weeks.
