Some of the occupations that most commonly advertised for Bloggers in the past 30 days were Creative Writers, Public Relations Specialists, Reporters and Correspondents, Marketing Managers, and Real Estate Agents. Most of these occupations would make sense since they are writing or PR/marketing related. However, we were surprised to see Real Estate Agents on this list. As it turns out, many real estate companies are looking for people to blog about the housing market in their area.

Our Hiring Scale shows that jobs for Bloggers are likely to be moderately hard-to-fill, scoring a 68 out of a possible 99. San Francisco, which had the third highest demand in the past 30 days, is currently the area with the most difficult recruiting conditions. Other locations with high demand include New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

However, we noticed that "social media" job titles are very prevalent, proving that using social media as a business practice is not a fad. Companies are likely developing very specific roles (and possibly entire teams or departments) around social media.

So, if demand is increasing rapidly, are there enough qualified potential candidates to fill these jobs? Of the locations with the highest demand for bloggers – New York, Washington (DC), and Los Angeles – Recruiters in New York are likely to see the longest average posting duration. In the New York City area, hiring demand has grown about 12% over the past year and job ads for bloggers stay online for about 40 days – or just shorter than 6 weeks. This is just slightly longer than the national average of 37 days.

First, we'll look at overall hiring demand. In February 2012, approximately 2,600 job ads were posted online for Marketing Managers with social media skills. This is a 62% year-over-year increase compared to February 2011. Social media job ads represented about 10% of total hiring demand for Marketers during February.

The 10 metropolitan areas with the most job ads are posted below. Recruiters posted the most job ads for positions located in New York, with more than 360 ads. This is a 44% year-over-year increase compared to February of 2011. However, of the 10 metros listed below, the highest growth was seen in Dallas, up 115% and more than double the hiring demand as was seen last year.

Some of the commonly required skills for Marketers with social media experience are listed below. The required skills go beyond just Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites. Many of the required tools and technologies involve designing and creating collateral, website management, as well as analytical skills.

Below are the 5 locations with the highest number of job ads with blogging specifications over the past 90 days – all of which have seen year-over-year growth. Recruiters placed almost 800 job ads for openings located in New York, the most of any U.S. city. However, Seattle saw the largest year-over-year increase, up about 34%.

Not surprisingly, some of the most common fields to include blogging skills in their job ads are PR and Marketing or Web Developer fields- essentially those that will be blogging or maintaining the platforms. Some of the most commonly advertised job titles were:

Of the above 5 locations with the highest demand for bloggers, Washington (DC) has the smallest talent pool, with about 17 potential candidates per advertised opening. Also, job ads stay online longer than average in this area. The average online posting period of an ad for a job located in Washington, DC is just over 6.5 weeks, compared to the national average of 6 weeks.
