Recruiting Agencies Posted over 390,000 New Jobs Online in July

By Abby Lombardi on August 29, 2011 in Staffing Industry.

In July, staffing agencies posted more than 390,000 new online job ads, the highest volume so far this year.  Job ads by recruiting and staffing firms were up 10% from the previous month and 32% from July 2010. Since the beginning of the year, staffing firms have advertised more than 2.5 million jobs in the US, accounting for 28% of all jobs that have been listed online.

With Healthcare and IT being two of the hottest fields right now, it is not surprising that these jobs dominate the list below, which has the 10 occupations most advertised by staffing agencies in July. More than 55,000 ads were placed for Registered Nurse openings as the most in-demand job in the US.  Of the 10 most demanded occupations below, RN's also experienced the highest year-over-year growth.  Web Developers saw the most demand of any tech related job.

In July, about 20,000 job ads were placed by staffing firms for jobs in New York, the highest of any metro area.  Despite a high volume, this represents a 6% year-over-year decline.  Washington, DC, which had the 3rd highest volume by staffing firms, also saw a decline of 3%.  The other metro areas with high demand – Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas – saw double-digit increases in July compared to July 2010.

Recruiting conditions will be moderately difficult for most of the occupations above, since they are in high demand across the country by both employers and staffing firms.  For healthcare jobs, recruiting agencies in Dallas and Washington, DC are likely to experience the most difficult conditions of the 5 metro areas previously mentioned. These 2 areas have the smallest talent pool of these locations and Recruiters are likely to compete heavily to source from it.  Despite being the most difficult locations, they fall above the national average.  The best conditions are likely to be seen  in New York, since the talent pool of healthcare professionals remains large.

Pharmaceutical Industry Slow to Increase Employment as Hiring Demand Shifts West

By Abby Lombardi on July 13, 2011 in Staffing Industry.

The Pharmaceutical Industry has been slow to pick up employment over the past 3 years.  Recruiters placed 5,990 online job ads in this industry in June 2011, a 5% increase from one year ago.  However, job ads on the East Coast are down significantly as employment seems to be increasing in the western US.

Hiring Demand for the Pharmaceutical Industry – 4 Years

The Pacific region – California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii – led the US in hiring demand in June with a 5% year-over-year increase in online job ads.  Even the central areas increased employment, with job ads in the East North Central region up 47% from June 2010. However, the East Coast regions (New England, Mid-Atlantic, and South Atlantic) have all seen drastic decreases.  The Mid-Atlantic, although holding on with the second highest hiring demand, saw a 27% year-over-year decrease from June 2010.

Highly demanded jobs in the Pacific region vary from Scientist occupations to Marketing.  The most in-demand job during June 2011 was Medical scientists, which saw a 9% growth from June 2010.  Within the 10 most demanded jobs, Sales Representatives saw the most growth with 128 new online job ads in June, a 96% increase.  Hiring demand at Pharmaceutical Manufacturers decreased for Industrial Engineers, Marketing Managers and Operations Managers.  These 3 positions experienced double-digit decreases in comparison to June 2010.

Recruiters in these Pacific areas will experience various degrees of ease in recruiting, depending on the specific occupation and local talent pool.  For example, in San Francisco, the highest demanding metropolitan area on the West Coast, employers and staffing firms in the pharmaceutical industry are likely to experience difficulties recruiting for Medical Scientists.  According to the Hiring Scale™, demand for qualified candidates with these skill sets remains high across the US, with even higher than average demand in relation to the size of the existing talent pool.  Recruiters sourcing for Medical Scientists in the San Francisco metro area will need to compete heavily to source from this talent pool.

However, Sales Representatives will be easier to source for.  Despite the 96% increase in hiring demand within the Pacific region, the talent pool within San Francisco is larger than the US average.  Recruiters here are likely to have less time and expenses associated with sourcing and filling these positions.

Transportation Industry Hits New High in Online Job Ads – Midwest States See Employment Growth

By Abby Lombardi on July 5, 2011 in Staffing Industry.

After a decline in April, more than 25,000 job ads were placed online during May 2011 in the Transportation and Warehousing sector.  These latest numbers not only represent a 42% increase over May 2010, but also a 4-year high in online job ads for this sector, which has been hit hard by the economy since 2009.

The volume of job ads varies greatly by company.  The top 3 employers that posted job ads during May were US Xpress, CR England and Schneider National.  Of these top 3 organizations, US Express and CR England experienced growth from last year.  Combined, they posted more than 1,800 new online job ads in May 2011.  Schneider National, however, saw negative growth in hiring demand during this time period.  According to WANTED AnalyticsTM, Celadon Trucking and Swift Transportation did not post job ads online during May 2010.

Truck Drivers were the most demanded occupation within Transportation and Warehousing with more than 13,000 online job ads in May 2011 – a 59% increase from 2010.  Despite recent predictions that Midwest states will need longer to come out of this recession, many of these jobs are located in this area of the US.  Ohio, Illinois and Indiana are some states with the highest volume of new online job ads in this industry during May.  Combined, these 3 states placed more than 2,100 job ads in May (a 61% increase in job ads from May 2010).  The below heat map shows locations with higher than average hiring demand for this position.  Much of the demand is located over Midwest states.

Due to increased competition among employers and staffing firms for potential candidates, recruiters across the US are likely to experience moderately difficult recruiting conditions.   However, each location will see varying degrees.  For example, Springfield, Illinois has seen hiring demand increase by 71% from May 2010.  It is likely that recruiters will have a very difficult time sourcing candidates in their limited talent pool, according to the Hiring ScaleTM.  On the other hand, Chicago will see conditions that are better than the national average.  Despite the fact that Chicago has seen the highest demand of any US metropolitan area with more than 600 job ads during May, their talent pool remains larger than many other locations and recruiters here should be able to fill positions faster than many of their counterparts.

Employment for the Financial Services Industry Keeps Growing in 2011

By Abby Lombardi on June 28, 2011 in Business/Finance, Finance - XLF, Staffing Industry.

Despite the Fed recently lowering the US economic and employment forecasts, employment in the financial services industry is growing.  Over the past 60 days, financial organizations posted more than 100,000 new online job ads – a 24% increase from the same 60-day period in 2010.  In fact, job ads within this industry have been booming since the beginning of the year, now up 19% from January.

Hiring Demand in the Financial Services Industry over the Past 4 Years

The top employer in the financial services industry was Wells Fargo, placing more than 6,600 new online job ads, 370% more than the same time period last year. Other top employers include UnitedHealth Group, Citigroup, PNC, Chase, Fidelity Investments and Morgan Stanley – all of which placed more jobs this year than last.

The most demanded field in this sector was for Business and Financial Operations occupations such as Loan Officers, Management Analysts and Financial Analysts. The second most in-demand field, with 17,000 online job ads, were Management occupations like Financial Managers, Marketing Managers and Operations Managers.  This field saw a 20% increase from last year.  However, the greatest year over year growth came from Computer Programming-related jobs with a combined 54% increase.  Computer Programmers are some of the most demanded by employers and recruiting agencies across all industries in the US, so it isn’t surprising that financial services organizations are also sourcing for these skills.

Top 3 Occupations within the Financial Services Industry

Also not surprising is that the overwhelming majority of these jobs are located in the financial capital, New York City.  However, other metro areas seeing double-digit increases in online job ads are Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Atlanta and San Francisco.  Washington, DC and Philadelphia are the only metro areas in the top 10 list seeing decreases in volume.

Depending on the position and location being recruited for, employers and recruiting agencies will see varying degrees of ease in sourcing candidates and filling these jobs. For example, Market Research Analysts will be moderately difficult to recruit for since they are highly in demand by employers and recruiting agencies in all industries.  According to the Hiring Scale™, New York has seen more demand for candidates with these skill sets and has just 4 potential candidates for every online job ad over this time period.  In comparison, the talent supply in Los Angeles is larger and recruiters are likely to fill these positions easier and faster than the national average.

However, those organizations in New York looking to hire Financial Analysts, will have an easier time recruiting than the national average.  Although this position is in high demand currently, there is a very large talent pool in the NY metro area to source from.  In comparison, Boston will likely see a much more difficult time in recruiting since their pool of candidates is smaller.  Boston should look to New York to see if it is possible to recruit candidates from this area to fill any talent shortages they may be experiencing.

The Recruiting Agency Crystal Ball: What’s Coming down the Pipeline from Direct Employers

By Abby Lombardi on June 21, 2011 in Staffing Industry.

As the employment situation slowly turns around, direct employers are placing more online job ads and will likely need assistance from recruiting agencies to fill open positions.  We took a look at what jobs corporate recruiters have advertised over the past 4 weeks and here’s our prediction on the top 5 fields that staffing firms will be asked to source for in the coming weeks.

1. Computer Programmers

Is anyone not recruiting Computer Programmers?  As the most in-demand field by direct employers in this 28-day time period, there have been 128,000 new online job ads for Computer Programmers.  This field has seen incredible growth over the past year and there aren’t any indications that it will slow down.  The top jobs within Computer Programming are Computer Systems Analysts, Computer Software Engineers, Web Developers, Computer Support Specialists, and Network and Computer Systems Administrators – all of which saw double-digit year-over-year growth from the same 4-week period in 2010.

2. Marketing

Think Marketers are everywhere?  Apparently, employers don’t think they’re in enough places.  More than 15,700 job ads were placed by direct employers for Marketers over the past 4 weeks, a definite sign that companies are boosting their marketing efforts to drive their businesses.  Look at the Hiring Demand chart below, this field is growing very quickly.  In May 2009, there were 7,857 new Marketing Manager job ads placed online by employers.  Fast-forward two years to May 2011 and that number almost tripled to 21,218 online job ads and hitting a 4-year high. This drastic increase in hiring demand has reduced the US candidate supply from 20 potential candidates for every job ad in 2009 to about 10 candidates in the current market.

3. Healthcare

Based on the continuous increase of hiring demand, the talent shortage in the healthcare sector is not going to get any better.  Direct employers placed more than 96,000 new online job ads over the past 4 weeks.  Registered Nurses have been the single most in-demand occupation every month for the past 4 years.  Of these 96,000 healthcare job ads in the past 28 days, 43,000 (44%) were for RNs.  But let’s not forget about other healthcare jobs – like Physical Therapists (which saw a 67% year-over-year increase) and Occupational Therapists (with a 74% growth) – that are being demanded by hospitals, care facilities, rehabilitation centers, therapists, and home-health nursing providers.

Although recruiters across the US will likely see difficulties in hiring within the healthcare sector, Cleveland should see the most recruiting since more than 1,600 jobs were advertised here over the past 28 days – the most of any US metro area, according to the Hiring ScaleTM.  However, if recruiters in Cleveland look to Akron when sourcing, they will find an alternative source of candidates.  While competition among employers remains fierce in Cleveland, Akron falls in line with the national average and will see slightly easier hiring conditions.  Akron is about a 50 minute drive from Cleveland and many potential candidates may be willing to make the commute for work.

4. Accountants and Auditors

After a massive financial crisis and slow growth over the past two years, hiring demand for Accountants and Auditors has steadily increased so far in 2011.  Now up 29% from last year and a sign that the economy is turning around, there were more than 10,000 online job ads for Accountants and another 4,000 for Auditors. All of the 5 largest accounting firms have placed job ads for Accountants and Auditors over the past 28 days.  PricewaterhouseCoopers, the 3rd largest accounting firm in the US, posted the most online ads with more than 1,000 in the past 4 weeks.

Not surprisingly, most of these job ads are in the New York metro area.  But, recruiting firms in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago and Atlanta should be on the lookout – online job ads in these locations for this field are on the rise.

5. Engineering

Overall, demand for Engineers by employers is up 53%.  9 of the top 10 direct employers looking for Engineers have placed significantly more ads over the past 28 days than the same time last year.  Although the Army National Guard is the only direct employer to not increase, they placed the most job ads of any employer and are even with hiring demand in 2010.

Recruiters in California should be aware that direct employers placed more than 5,000 online job ads for positions located in California, representing a 55% increase in hiring demand, and talent sourcing could be difficult.

The good news?  If you’re recent grad in these fields or an experienced professional looking for a new job, these markets are growing at an exceptional pace.  Most areas of the US will experience talent shortages and recruiters will be competing heavily for your talents.  Make sure you update your resume and go on a few practice interviews.  Recruiters may be knocking on your door very soon!

Retailers Don’t Let Slow Sales in May Hinder Recruiting

By Abby Lombardi on June 15, 2011 in Hiring Demand Indicators, Staffing Industry.

Even though retail sales slowed in May, direct employers and recruiting firms in the retail trade industry posted more than 66,000 online job ads in May – 30% more than May 2010.  One of the most in-demand occupations being advertised for is Marketing Managers, which contributed 1,360 job ads at a 28% year-over-year growth.

Employment growth at individual companies varies greatly.  Of the top 10 retail companies recruiting for Marketing positions, 4 are even with 2010, 4 have increased hiring demand and 2 have declined.  Even though Amazon.com declined the most – just over 48% from May 2010 – they still maintain the highest number of new job listings for Marketing Manager positions in May.  Macy’s, who saw the highest year-over-year growth in retail sales (7.9%) during May, saw a 155% growth in online job ads.

The five metropolitan areas demanding the most retail-related Marketing Managers are:

  1. Seattle, WA
  2. New York, NY
  3. San Francisco, CA
  4. San Jose, CA
  5. Chicago, IL

Although this position will be difficult to fill in general due to high demand for a limited talent pool, recruiters may see that it is easier and quicker to fill these jobs in some locations where there are larger talent pools.  For example, employers in San Jose will find it slightly easier to source candidates, due to the fact that the local supply is larger.

In comparison, retailers in the four other metro areas with the highest demand will see more difficulty in sourcing for Marketing Managers. Companies in Seattle, New York, San Francisco and Chicago will see conditions worse than the national average.  This means that recruiters in these 4 areas are likely to spend more time and expenses on sourcing candidates for this hard-to-fill position.

Atlanta’s Online Job Ads Spike in May, Seeing 80% Increase and Talent Shortage for Many Positions

By Abby Lombardi on June 14, 2011 in Computer/Math/IT, Health Care, Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

Atlanta, GA experienced an 80% year-over-year increase in hiring demand during May 2011, when direct employers and recruiting firms placed more than 35,000 job ads online.  This also made it Atlanta's month with the most online job ads in any single month over the past 4 years.

Of the 4,645 direct employers, the five organizations that placed the most job ads in May were AT&T, RJ Reynolds, SunTrust Banks, Kijiji International Limited, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  Although AT&T placed the most job ads with 581, the greatest year-over-year growth for any company came from RJ Reynolds with 38,000% increase from May 2010.  The only employer in the top 10 that didn't see growth was the Dublin-based subsidiary of eBay and Craigslist competitor, Kijiji International Limited, which was even with May 2010.

With this sudden increase in demand, Atlanta will fall in line with a nationwide talent shortage for Registered Nurses, Computer Programmers, Marketers, and Accountants.  Of these most demanded positions in the Atlanta area, Marketing Managers will be the most difficult for corporate recruiters and recruiting agencies to hire for, according to the Hiring ScaleTM.  With a 73% increase in hiring demand for Marketing Managers versus May 2010, the competition among employers in Atlanta has dramatically increased and there are only 5.6 potential candidates for each online job ad. However, due to this increase in hiring demand and competition among employers for this talent pool, job seekers in the Atlanta metropolitan area looking for Marketing Manager jobs should be relatively successful in finding new positions.

According to the Hiring Scale, the easiest job for recruiters to source for is Preschool Teachers.  With only 17 job ads placed May 2011, demand for this position by employers has remained low and recruiters in the Atlanta area will have an easier job hiring Preschool Teachers than the national average.  However, Preschool Teachers looking for a new job will see few openings online and more competition among candidates, consequently finding the job market more difficult at this time.

Nursing Shortage Continues, With Demand for RNs up 53% in 2011

By Juli Morris on June 10, 2011 in Health Care, Staffing Industry.

Employers and staffing agencies posted more than 121,000 new job ads for Registered Nurses in May, up 46% from May 2010. About 10% of that growth, or 12,700, were ads placed for positions at General and Surgical Hospitals, where annual turnover rates for RNs average 14% according to a recent KPMG survey. Year-over-year growth in hiring demand for hospitals is a strong 36%, but it should be noted that May 2010 was also the 4-year low for demand for RNs in this sector. Growth in 2011 has been slower, at 24%.

Sourcing talent for RN positions at Hospitals is less difficult than sourcing for RN positions generally. The talent supply with that sector experience drops by 34%, but as we've already seen, hiring demand in that sector is just 10% of the overall demand for RNs.

Demand for Recruiters up 64% in 2011

By Juli Morris on June 9, 2011 in Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

Although the pace of US job growth appears to be slowing for most sectors, hiring demand for recruiters by corporate HR departments and staffing agencies has boomed this year, up 64% since January. On a year-over-year basis, demand was up 36% over May 2010, with over 10,100 new job ads posted. Hiring by direct employers made up the bulk of this activity, with over 6,600 ads or 66% of overall demand. Demand by direct employers has also increased at a faster pace, up 44% over May 2010 vs. a 24% increase for staffing agencies.

Demand for recruiters increased in all of the top 25 metro areas over May 2010: metro NYC still has more than double the demand for recruiters as metro LA, the next highest, but the hottest growth spots were the Minneapolis, Columbus, and Raleigh metro areas, all with gains of more than 100% over May 2010.

Although metro NYC and LA have the greatest hiring demand and double-digit growth from May 2010, filling positions in these locations is only of average difficulty because they also has the largest talent supplies, with 18,000 potential candidates in the metro NYC area, and 6,600 in LA. It's a different story in northern California: our Hiring Scale™ metrics show San Francisco and San Jose each with 9 candidates for every position. Sacramento, which is not in the top 25 metro areas, would be a good place to source talent for San Francisco and San Jose. There are 16 candidates for each position in Sacramento, and a talent pool not much smaller than that of San Jose, competing there for less than half as many open positions.

Online Job Ads in Los Angeles are Up, Despite Layoff Concerns

By Abby Lombardi on June 8, 2011 in Computer/Math/IT, Health Care, Staffing Industry.

In mid-May, Forbes released their list of “America’s Pink-Slip Capitals” which ranked metro areas having the most employees affected by mass layoffs in the first quarter of this year. The city appearing in their top slot turned out to be Los Angeles, CA, where more than 17,000 people were put out of work. We took a look at hiring demand, trends, and job generation in Los Angeles over the past 60 days to see what the job market looks like now.

First, there is good news for job seekers in LA.  There have been 76,900 jobs posted online in the past 60 days by employers and recruiting agencies – a 14% increase from the same 60-day period in 2010. Although April saw a slight decrease of about 2,000 job ads less than in March, May rebounded strongly with more than 47,900 new job ads posted.  Of more than 9,700 direct employers placing job ads over the past 60 days, the top 5 employers in Los Angeles were AT&T, Kaiser Permanente, IBM, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Unitedhealth Group, all of which have seen growth from last year.  Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has seen the greatest year-over-year increase at 1257%, but AT&T has placed the most jobs with just over 1,000 in the past 60 days.

Since three of the top five companies are in the healthcare sector, it isn’t surprising that the most in-demand job in Los Angeles over the past 60 days was Registered Nurses.  However, within the top 10 occupations being recruited for over this 60 day period, three are computer programming related – Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts and Computer Software Engineers, with a combined total of 5,140 jobs in Los Angeles.  Other high-demand jobs include Retail Sales, Marketing Managers, Administrative Assistants and Sales Managers.  Nine of the top 10 positions have seen double digit growth from 2010. Only Retail Sales Supervisors saw a decrease in the number of jobs advertised.

Depending on the position being recruited for, companies will see varying difficulty associated with filling positions and job seekers will find different degrees of ease in securing new jobs.  For instance, according the Hiring Scale, organizations in this metropolitan area looking for Registered Nurses will experience relatively fast recruiting times.  There are approximately 81,440 Registered Nurses in the Los Angeles metro area, meaning recruiters can expect about 34 candidates for each open job, more than double the US average of 16:1.  Consequently, job seekers will see increased competition for these positions and may see more difficulties in finding a new job.

Hiring Scale for Registered Nurses in Los Angeles, California:

If you look at Web Developer positions, the opposite trend occurs.  There are approximately 9,290 Web Developers in the Los Angeles area, meaning recruiters will see approximately 4 candidates for each open position over the past 60 days.  Recruiters will see more competition for these jobs, making it more difficult to fill open positions.  Web Developers looking for employment though, should be able to find new jobs relatively quickly since employers will be competing for this talent.

Those organizations in Los Angeles that are struggling to fill Web Developer positions have an alternative.  Nearby Bakersfield maintains a ratio of 39 candidates for each position.  This alternative city will allow Los Angeles organizations to source additional Web Developers that are willing to make the 1-hour commute.
