Recruiting for a Recruiter?

By Abby Lombardi on October 16, 2012 in Recruiters.

In September 2012, more than 14,000 jobs were advertised online for Recruiters and staffing professionals in the United States. We've seen a strong level of hiring demand in 2012 so far, far out-pacing pre-recession demand. However, we are starting to see a slowing in the number of new ads posted online each month. This similar trend has been seen in past year, so it may just be a seasonal effect. In September, the volume of available listings was up 12% compared to September 2011 and 29% versus the same time period in 2010.

The highest volume of listings during September seen in New York (NY), Washington (DC), Chicago (IL), Los Angeles (CA), and San Francisco (CA). The New York metro area had the most available positions. However, San Francisco experienced the greatest growth in demand over the past year of these five areas, up 36% compared to the same time period last year.

We've been watching hiring demand for Recruiters for a while and noticed that job requirements continue to evolve for this profession. In addition to traditional recruiting skills – like experience with applicant tracking software (ATS) and full lifecycle recruiting – there are several emerging skill sets that are gaining more traction every month. Two of these include negotiation and social media skills. The number of job ads that look for candidates with strong negotiation abilities is up 13% compared to September 2011. Job ads with social media requirements have grown even more incredibly, up 52% since last year.

If demand has grown since last year and the skills are changing, will open recruiting positions be hard-to-fill? Our Hiring Scale™ shows that they will be moderately difficult to recruit. On average, employers in the US leave job ads online for about 5 weeks. Companies in San Francisco, California and Minneapolis, Minnesota are currently experiencing more challenging overall recruiting conditions. There is more fierce competition among employers since demand is growing more quickly than the local talent supply can support. Job ads in this area remain online for an average of 6 weeks.

Hiring Scale for Recruiters in San Francisco: Hard-to-Fill Location

Source: WANTED Analytics

However, if you are a Recruiter in San Francisco or Minneapolis (or willing to relocate to these areas for a job), it's likely to be easier than average to find work. More companies are looking for your skills and it's likely that there are fewer candidates for you to compete against to get the job.

In comparison, we also see that it is less difficult to fill recruiting job openings in Jackson, Mississippi and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Larger talent supply compared to the hiring demand by employers in these metro areas means that Recruiters positions are likely to be filled easier and faster. The average duration of a job ad in these locations is 3.7 weeks, more than one week shorter than national averages. If you are a Recruiter looking for work in one of these 2 areas, you are likely to have more difficulties since there is less demand for your talent and a higher number of potential candidates you will compete against.

How Mobile Savvy Do Recruiters Need To Be?

By Abby Lombardi on September 6, 2012 in Recruiters.

From making the careers page on your company's website mobile-friendly to communicating with potential candidates through text, mobile recruiting is a hot topic in the HR space. Some companies have jumped in and started implementing strategies, while others are deciding how to begin. The last time we reported on this topic, we had just begun to see increases in the volume of online job ads that include specifications for mobile recruiting, so we thought it was time to revisit this. In the past 90 days, there were more than 500 unique online job ads in the US for Recruiters that included mobile recruitment skills. This is an 89% increase over the same 90-day time period in 2011. Hiring has been increasing dramatically, especially since the beginning of 2012.

Hiring Demand for Mobile Recruiting Skills – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

We see the most job ads being posted in New York City, Washington (DC), San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle. While the volume of ads in each location may not be very high (ranging from 17-29 ads in each area), all 5 areas saw year-over-year increased in hiring demand. Washington, DC grew the most, up 600% from the same 90-day period last year.

Interestingly, the most in-demand mobile recruiting skill is knowledge of the Android platform. Other skills that are highly demanded include;

  1. Android
  2. Project Management
  3. Cloud Computing
  4. Mobile Development
  5. Applicant tracking software (ATS)

Across the US, our heat map of Hiring Scales shows that the location with the best conditions for employers to source candidates is New York City. It is likely that employers here will be able to fill jobs with less difficulty than most of their counterparts. There are only a few employers currently hiring, but there is a higher concentration of qualified candidates in this area. If employers are looking for Recruiters with mobile skills, they should look to New York City to source candidates. Or, if a company is deciding where the position should be based, they should consider having the job located here.

On the other hand, Recruiters with mobile skills will have a hard time finding work in New York since there are more potential qualified candidates in this area than there are employers looking to hire. The best place for qualified candidates to look for work is in San Francisco, CA.

Hiring for Recruiters with Social Media Experience at New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on August 28, 2012 in Human Resources, Recruiters.

It's been a while since we covered hiring demand for recruiting professionals with social media experience and a few people have requested updated data. Over the past 90 days, more than 2,700 job ads were available that called for Recruiters to have social media skills and experience across the US – representing about 7% of all hiring demand for Recruiters in the past 90 days. Companies are more commonly integrating social media across more business processes – and HR and recruiting is no different. The number of job ads that require social media skills for Recruiters also reached a new all-time high, now up 40% year-over-year compared to the same time period in 2011 and more than 191% from 2 years ago. Connecting with potential candidates through social media platforms is a great way to attract talent and build relationships with applicants.

Hiring Demand for Recruiters with Social Media Skills – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Below are the 10 most commonly required skills in Recruiter job ads that include social media as a skill set:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Applicant tracking software (ATS)
  3. Time management
  4. Microsoft PowerPoint
  5. Project Management
  6. Negotiation skills
  7. Microsoft Word
  8. Oracle HRIS
  9. Business development
  10. Software development

Many of these were expected, like knowing how to use ATS systems, Microsoft, and negotiation skills. However, we found it interesting that software development made the list. Upon further investigation and looking at the job ads, we saw that these positions will be sourcing a lot of technical jobs and these jobs require Recruiters understand software development to be able to source potential candidates. The same is true for business development – many of these recruiting positions will be sourcing for sales and business development positions. When you look at some of the most common job titles for Recruiters, this may be confirmed. In addition to "Recruiter" and "Sourcer" some common titles include: Sales Recruiter, Information Technology Recruiter

Recruiters with social media skills are most frequently recruited for jobs located in New York City, Chicago, Washington (DC), Boston, and Los Angeles. While employers in New York placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool, one of the highest year-over-year growth areas was actually seen in Los Angeles where demand grew more than 73% in the past 90 days compared to the same time period in 2011. The second highest growth was seen in Boston, up 62% versus last year.

As hiring demand continues, a limited talent supply of potential candidates with proven social media experience will create challenges for employers. The Hiring Scale™ shows that employers across the US spend about 5 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for recruiting positions that require social media skills. However, each location experiences a varying degree of difficulty. Companies in San Francisco, CA and Minneapolis, MN are currently seeing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions. Fierce competition has emerged as more employers are looking to fill jobs in these areas than the local talent supply can support. In these 2 areas, the average posting period is 6 weeks, meaning it is likely to take 1 week longer to fill social media recruiting positions than on average across the United States.

Our Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Rochester, NY and Milwaukee, WI. Lower hiring demand in these areas, a larger talent supply, and better overall conditions means that Recruiters are likely to fill open recruiting jobs that require social media skills faster than average.

Mobile Recruiters See Increasing Hiring Demand

By Abby Lombardi on May 24, 2012 in Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

It's been projected that recruiting via mobile and text will grow in 2012. So, we thought we would look at how many online job ads for Recruiters require these skills. In April, there were more than 200 available jobs being advertised online that included mobile aspects of jobs. Some jobs are looking for Recruiters to recruit via mobile phones, while other are looking for recruiting professionals to create or maintain a mobile friendly online career center for potential candidates.

We wanted to see what skills are required of potential candidates in mobile recruiting positions. Below are the 10 tools and technologies most commonly listed in job ads that candidates should have experience with.

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Microsoft PowerPoint
  3. Oracle HRIS
  4. Microsoft Word
  5. Software as a Service (SaaS)
  6. Applicant Tracking Software
  7. Candidate tracking
  8. Salesforce CRM
  9. Social networking sites
  10. Statistical analysis

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that these jobs are likely to be moderately hard-to-fill across the US. While the number of employers looking to implement mobile recruiting strategies seems to be increasing, the number of potential candidates that have experience is not growing at the same pace. On average, we see that job ads for mobile Recruiters stay online for about 37 days – or 5.2 weeks.

Recruiting for Recruiters: What Skills Employers Look for in Candidates

By Abby Lombardi on May 16, 2012 in Human Resources, Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

As employers expand their recruiting staff, they may be gearing up to hire more across the entire organization. During April 2012, more than 5,800 jobs were advertised online for Recruiters – up more than 10% year-over-year when compared to April of 2011 and more than 33% versus April 2010. Approximately 3,200 (55%) of these jobs were placed by corporations (or direct employers). The remaining 2,600 jobs were advertised online by staffing firms. Online job listings that were posted directly by corporations have increased about 17% year-over-year, while hiring by recruiting agencies increased just 3% between April 2011 and April 2012.

Volume of Job Ads for Recruiters – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Hiring Demand for Recruiters

Source: WANTED Analytics

The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads for Recruiters during April were New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington (DC). Although Recruiters in New York posted the most ads of any city, hiring demand over the past year actually declined about 1% compared to the same time month in 2011. In comparison, Recruiters in Dallas saw the most year-over-year growth of these five locations, with 27% more job ads than were seen online in April 2011.

We are also able to see that the 10 tools and technologies that Recruiters are most commonly required to have experience with are:

  1. Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Excel)
  2. Oracle HRIS
  3. Customer relationship management (CRM)
  4. Word processing
  5. Applicant tracking software (ATS)
  6. Data mining
  7. Candidate tracking
  8. Social networking sites
  9. Contact management
  10. Workforce management

Nationwide, companies sourcing candidates with animation skill sets are likely to find them moderately hard-to-recruit, with varying degrees of difficulty in each location depending on the available talent supply. The Hiring Scale™ shows that employers in Los Angeles are currently experiencing more difficulties than average when sourcing for Recruiter job openings. While demand for this skill has grown, the local talent pool of qualified professionals has not grown as the same rate and employers are likely to compete heavily to attract talent. Increased competition for a limited pool of candidates will also cause a longer time-to-fill than many other areas across the United States.

The Hiring Scale also shows that the best places to recruit Animators are currently Omaha (Nebraska), Fort Wayne (Indiana) and Jackson (Mississippi). These areas are likely to fill job openings faster than the rest of the United States. Job ads in these areas are posted for an average of about 4 weeks, 1 week shorter than in Los Angeles.

Will 2012 Be the Year that Hiring for Recruiters Goes Mobile?

By Abby Lombardi on March 1, 2012 in Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

Mobile recruiting is a hot topic in the human resources field and there is some debate on when – and if – mobile recruiting will become a more widely accepted practice. It’s been forecasted that mobile recruiting will be one of the biggest trends in talent management this year. We thought it would be interesting to look at how many online job ads for Recruiters include mobile skills as a requirement. Hiring demand for these skills could indicate how quickly mobile strategies are being implemented by HR departments in the US.

We found 15 employers that specifically mention mobile recruiting in their job – either in the description of the position or as a required skill. Since some companies are sourcing candidates for multiple positions, this works out to 23 unique job openings currently being advertised online. Although this doesn’t represent a large portion of job ads for Recruiters, this is a trend we plan on watching.

Hiring Demand for Recruiters with Mobile Skills – 16-Week Hiring Trend

Hiring Demand for Mobile Recruiters

Some of the most commonly advertised job titles that include mobile recruiting in their job ads include:

  • Recruiter (or Technical Recruiter)
  • Telerecruiter
  • Learning Development Manager
  • Bilingual Spanish Recruiter
  • Staffing Consultant

Since mobile recruiting strategies are still developing, our Hiring Scale™ shows that these jobs are moderately hard-to-fill. Much of the difficulty will be caused by the fact that the current talent pool is small. Our Candidate Supply charts estimates there are less than 1,000 qualified candidates currently in the workforce. These candidates represent 0.5% of all people currently working as Recruiters. If you are looking for work as a Recruiter, these skills may become more valuable if hiring demand increases.

Easiest Places to Source Social Media Skills

By Abby Lombardi on February 17, 2012 in Advertising/Marketing, Recruiters, Sales.

Yesterday, we posted that hiring demand for social media skills reached an all time high in January. With increased demand, many Recruiters struggle to find qualified talent with this skill set. So, we thought we'd provide some of the places with the largest talent pools and are currently the best markets to source social media skills in. We looked at hiring conditions for the 4 of the fields with high demand for social media skills: Marketing, Public Relations, Recruiting, and Sales.

As you can see by the below Hiring Scale™ snapshots, each national average for each occupation will experience varying degrees of difficulty. This depends on the hiring demand for those jobs and the talent supply of qualified potential candidates in the workforce. In these locations, Recruiters are likely to see more candidates per job opening, less competition with other employers, a shorter time-to-fill for open jobs, and a lower cost-per-hire. Recruiters that have hard-to-fill social media job openings (or are sourcing for several jobs) may find it beneficial to post ads and source candidates in these cities to expand their talent pools.

Consequently if you have social media skills and are looking to find work, these are likely to be the hardest places for you to find a job. Since there is lower hiring demand and a higher talent supply, you are likely to compete with more candidates for fewer jobs in these cities.

Job Ads for Recruiters Bounce Back in January

By Abby Lombardi on February 15, 2012 in Recruiters, Staffing Industry.

During the first half of 2011, we saw the hiring demand for Recruiters increase steadily. However, at the end of 2011, we saw the volume of job ads for staffing professionals decline. We were hoping this was a seasonal trend, and that hiring would increase again in 2012. It looks as if it may be starting. In January, more than 6,100 jobs were advertised online – that's a 26% year-over-year increase compared to January 2011.  It is also close to the 2011 high which was seen in August 2011 when just over 6,300 ads were posted online. Many times we watch hiring trends for Recruiters because it can signal that companies are gearing up for more hiring – do you think this increase in demand for Recruiters means there is more planned hiring in 2012?

The majority of job ads were placed by direct employers, accounting for 55% of all recruiting job ads. Staffing firms placed the remaining 45% of job ads. The top 5 employers that placed the most corporate recruiting jobs included Amazon.com, Insight Global Inc., PDS Technical Services, Microsoft and Capital One.

The 10 metropolitan areas with the highest volume of Recruiter job ads are below. 9 of the 10 saw increases when compared to January 2011. Despite seeing the most hiring demand, the New York metro areas was one of the few cities nationwide that saw a decline. Of these 10 locations, hiring for Recruiters grew the most in Seattle with a 92% increase. Atlanta was close behind in hiring growth at 90%.

According to our Hiring Scale™, Recruiter job openings are likely to be moderately hard-to-fill. Seattle, which we previously mentioned to have one of the fastest growing markets for Recruiters, is also one of the locations experiencing the most difficult conditions when trying to fill these jobs. The average duration of a job ad in Seattle is 42 days – or 6 weeks. Compared to the national average of 5 weeks, this verifies that employers in Seattle are experiencing more difficulties with filling these jobs and are seeing a longer time-to-fill. However, this means that if you are a Recruiter looking for work in the Seattle area, it is likely that there will be competition for your skills and it will be fairly easy for you to find a job.

On the other hand we our Hiring Scale also shows us that the easiest places to source for Recruiters are: Davenport (Iowa), Fort Wayne (Indiana), Springfield (Missouri), York (Pennsylvania), and Omaha (Nebraska). In these locations, hiring demand is fairly low and talent supply is high, meaning there are more candidates to chose among. Conversely, these are some of the most difficult places to find work as a Recruiter.

Hiring Demand for Recruiters Continues in December

By Abby Lombardi on January 18, 2012 in Recruiters.

Hiring for Recruiters ended 2011 on a strong note. In December, more than 3,900 jobs were posted online for Recruiting jobs – a 4% increase compared to December 2010. The majority (54%) of job ads were posted by corporate HR departments. Staffing firms and recruiting agencies accounted for about 1,800 job ads in December.

Some of the most commonly advertised job titles for Recruiters were:

  4. Healthcare Recruiter
  5. IT Recruiter
  6. Sales Recruiter
  7. Staffing Specialist
  8. Job Developer
  9. Advocate
  10. Campus Recruiter

Considering that tech talent is highly in demand across the US, it's not too surprising that the industry with the most need for Recruiters was Computer Systems Design Services. Other industries with high volumes of ads included Management and Consulting Services, Business Support Services, Customer Computer Programming, and General and Medical Surgical Hospitals.

The 10 cities with the highest number of unique job ads during December are listed below. Companies in New York placed the most job ads, with more than 350 postings during December 2011. Boston, however, experienced the greatest year-over-year growth, up 49% compared to December 2010. Washington (DC), Dallas, and Seattle saw declining demand when compared to the same time period in 2010.

Will Hiring Conditions for Recruiters Get Easier or Harder in 2012?

By Abby Lombardi on January 12, 2012 in Recruiters.

Hiring demand for Recruiters was strong in 2011. Throughout last year, there were more than 63,000 job ads posted online for Recruiting professionals, with more hiring than was seen since mid-2008. The volume of job ads over the entire year for Recruiters was up 22% when compared to 2010 and 123% versus 2009. Hiring is still slightly below pre-recession demand, down just 6% from 2008. Now that we're starting 2012 and general employment is starting to move, will hiring for Recruiters continue as strongly this year? More importantly, will recruiting conditions change in 2012?

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that the increase in demand for this fairly limited talent supply has caused moderately difficult recruiting conditions. High volumes of job ads often lead to more competition among employers to attract candidates and fill positions. Nationwide, there are about 20 potential candidates for every job that has been advertised online over the past 60 days. This is down from about 33 potential candidates per advertised opening in the same 60-day time period in 2009.  New York, which saw the highest demand for Recruiters last year, falls slightly above national averages. Here, there are about 25 potential candidates per job opening. However, with the high demand for talent, employers can still expect a fair amount of competition and a longer time-to-fill for these open jobs. In fact, job ads in New York stay online for almost 6 weeks. In comparison, the national average posting duration for Recruiter jobs is about 5 weeks – 1 full week shorter than in New York.

The places with the easiest recruiting conditions for Recruiters across the United States are:

  • Springfield, Illinois
  • Eugene, Oregon
  • Evansville, Indiana
  • Scranton, Pennsylvania
  • Omaha, Nebraska

On the other hand, if you are a Recruiter looking for work, these 5 locations may be the hardest places to find work. Nationwide, Recruiters are likely to see increased demand for your skills. Places having more difficult than average recruiting conditions are likely to be the most competitive when recruiting for these jobs. The local talent pool in Seattle, Washington is much smaller. For every advertised Recruiter job posted for the Seattle metro area, there are just 5 potential candidates. Employers are likely to vie for the talent and job seekers are likely to see less competition from other candidates.
