Will Human Resources Jobs in Canada Bounce Back?

By Abby Lombardi on May 8, 2013 in Human Resources.

The last time we reported on hiring demand for HR professionals in Canada, we saw that the number of job ads steeply declined at the end of 2012. We thought this might be a seasonal trend, since historical hiring shows declines in the last quarter of the year for these occupations. Now that we are one-third of the way through 2013, we wanted to take a look at more recent rends to see if demand has bounced back. In the past 120 days (the first 4 months of the year), there were approximately 19,000 unique jobs available online for human resources positions in Canada. Demand seemed to be picking up between January and March, but declined again in April. Hiring demand in the past 120 days represented a slight 0.6% decline when compared to the same 120-day period in 2012. Approximately 80% of these job ads were posted online directly by the employers and 20% were advertised by staffing agencies or third party recruiting firms.

The 5 cities in Canada with the most job ads in the past 120 days were Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. Toronto had just over 5,100 jobs available online. Despite seeing the highest demand of any city in Canada, this is a 1% year-over-year decline in hiring. In fact, all of the top 5 cities experiences declining demand. Edmonton was down 15% over the past 120 days, the largest decline of these top 5 cities.

The 10 HR related job titles that are most in-demand in Canada are:

  1. Human Resources Manager
  2. Recruiter
  3. Payroll Administrator
  4. Human Resources Generalist
  5. Payroll Clerk
  6. Human Resources Administrator
  7. Human Resources Advisor
  8. Human Resources Coordinator

Demand for Bloggers Reaches New High

By Abby Lombardi on May 6, 2013 in Occupations.

The last time we reported on jobs for Bloggers, we saw that demand was booming quickly. Since then, hiring hasn't slowed. In the past 30 days, there were about 3,500 unique jobs being advertised online for Bloggers in the US. This is a 55% year-over-year increase when compared to the same 30-day time period last year, and is also a new high in demand.

Hiring Demand for Bloggers in the US – 4-Year Trend

Some of the occupations that most commonly advertised for Bloggers in the past 30 days were Creative Writers, Public Relations Specialists, Reporters and Correspondents, Marketing Managers, and Real Estate Agents. Most of these occupations would make sense since they are writing or PR/marketing related. However, we were surprised to see Real Estate Agents on this list. As it turns out, many real estate companies are looking for people to blog about the housing market in their area.

Below are the 5 skills that are most commonly required in blogging jobs.

  • Detail oriented
  • WordPress
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Self-starting/Self-motivated

Our Hiring Scale shows that jobs for Bloggers are likely to be moderately hard-to-fill, scoring a 68 out of a possible 99. San Francisco, which had the third highest demand in the past 30 days, is currently the area with the most difficult recruiting conditions. Other locations with high demand include New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

Why Are Mobile Marketers Hard-to-Recruit?

By Abby Lombardi on May 1, 2013 in Advertising/Marketing.

Marketing professionals with mobile skills and experience are one of the hard-to-fill jobs on our Hiring Scale. We thought we'd take a look at some of the reasons why Recruiters are likely to be challenged when sourcing potential candidates for these open positions. First, we'll take a look at the Hiring Scale scores for these jobs. On average, mobile marketing positions score an 87 on our Hiring Scale. The Hiring Scale ranges from 1 to 99, with 99 representing the most difficult recruiting conditions. A job with an average score of 87 would be considered very hard-to-fill. Also, when you look at the below "heat map" of Hiring Scales in major metro areas, most areas are orange and red. Only a couple of locations are yellow, and none are green. So, it's likely that conditions will be rather difficult across the US.

One reason that hiring is likely to be difficult is the growing hiring demand. In the past 90 days, more than 22,000 jobs were available online for mobile marketing professionals. This is a 25% year-over-year increase, when compared to the same 90 days period in 2012. The below hiring trend chart shows that hiring has been growing steadily over the past 4 years.

Hiring Demand for Mobile Marketers in the US – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Hiring Demand for Mobile Marketers

Source: WANTED Analytics

There are currently 1,843 employers recruiting for mobile marketers. Not only are there a lot of companies hiring, but many companies are sourcing for several mobile marketing positions all at the same time. Below are the 10 companies with the most ads currently online for mobile marketers. As you can see, some of these are sourcing for 200+ jobs at the same time across the US. This means they will not only be competing against each other to attract candidates, but will also be competing against themselves to fill all jobs in a timely manner.

10 Companies with Most Job Ads for Mobile Marketers

However, growing demand isn't the only reason that Recruiters are likely to experience difficulties when sourcing potential candidates. There is a limited candidate supply in the US – approximately 19,000 people in the US work in mobile marketing. If there were 22,000 jobs in the past 90 days available, and only 19,000 potential candidates across the US, that means there aren't even enough people to fill all the open jobs.

Estimated Candidate Supply of Mobile Marketers in the US

So, what do you do if you are recruiting for an open mobile marketing position and are experiencing challenges with sourcing candidates? First, look to areas with lower demand constraints on their talent pool. Cities like Memphis, Tennessee and Springfield, Massachusetts currently only have a couple of employers sourcing for open positions. Keep in mind that these are current conditions – as hiring demand in each location changes, you may have to change the cities you look to for candidates.

Also, consider opening your search to candidates that don't have "marketing" in their job title. For example, Product Manager is actually the most commonly advertised mobile marketing job title. Other common ones include business development, product development, communications, and creative job titles.

How Fit is Healthcare Hiring?

By Abby Lombardi on April 30, 2013 in Health Care.

In the latest BLS report, the healthcare industry added 23,000 jobs, close to the 12-month average. Although we recently looked at hiring for Physical Therapists (the most commonly advertised job title in the US,) we haven't reviewed overall healthcare hiring in a while. Today, we looked at hiring demand for healthcare practitioners and healthcare support occupations. In March, there were just over 1 million jobs for healthcare related occupations, representing a 3% year-over-year increase in hiring. 75% over the jobs (approximately 754,000) were posted directly by employers, whereas staffing firms accounted for 25% of available healthcare job during March.

Hiring Demand for Healthcare Occupations: 4-Year Hiring Trend

Below are the 10 healthcare occupations with the most available job ads during March. Registered Nurses historically leads the US, and continues to do so. Not only did RN's have the most available job ads, but demand is also up about 13% when compared to march of 2012. However, Critical Care Nurses had the highest year-over-year growth with 34% more jobs posted online this year than during last March. 3 of the below 10 experienced year-over-year declines: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists.

The metro areas with the most healthcare jobs are New York, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Hiring in New York was up about 4% in March compared to last year. The number of jobs in Dallas grew the most in March, though, up an incredible 32% compared to last year. With the increased competition among employers to attract healthcare talent in Dallas, the time-to-fill and difficulty-to-hire is likely to be higher than the US average. In fact, jobs for healthcare professionals remain online for about 53 days in Dallas – or 7.5 weeks.

Are PHR's or SPHR's In Demand for HR Jobs?

By Abby Lombardi on April 29, 2013 in Human Resources.

Over the past 90 days, more than 14,000 jobs ads for human resources professionals specified that candidates would need either a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification or a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification. This is an 8.5% increase in the number of jobs that specify this certification in their ads. However, this only represents about 7% of all HR-related job ads posted online during the past 90 days.

Hiring Demand for SPHR or PHR Certifications in HR Jobs – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Within this field, the HR Managers and Specialist occupations had the most jobs requiring SPHR or PHRs. The most commonly advertised job titles that require an SPHR or PHR are:

  1. Recruiter
  2. Senior Recruiter
  3. Corporate Recruiter
  4. Human Resources Representative
  5. Technical Recruiter

According to our Hiring Scale, it's likely that employers will find positions that require these certifications hard-to-fill. Nationally, this requirement scores a 78 on the Hiring Scale. (The Hiring Scale ranges from 1-99, with 99 representing the most difficult market conditions.) The below heat map shows that there aren't any green metro areas, which would depict "easy" recruiting conditions. In fact, the best location in the US to find potential candidates with SPHR's or PHR's is Eugene, Oregon. Although Eugene doesn't necessarily have the largest talent pool in the US, it has just a few open positions. So, employers that are able to source candidates from this area are likely to experience very little competition from other companies trying to attract the same candidates.

Mobile Technology Jobs Still Reaching New Highs

By Abby Lombardi on April 24, 2013 in Computer/Math/IT.

It seems like every day there are more announcements about new mobile developments. With all the recent news about mobile technology, we wanted to take an updated look at hiring demand for mobile tech talent. In March 2013, there were more than 82,000 jobs available online for computer and IT talent that have mobile skills. This is not only a 22% year-over-year increase from last March, but also marks a new high in demand.

Hiring Demand for Mobile Technology Jobs – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Below are the 10 technical occupations that had the most job postings during March. Of the below, only Systems Software Developers declined in demand compared to last year. IT Project Managers and Applications Software Developers increased the most, up 47% and 33% respectively.

  1. Software Developers (Applications)
  2. Web Developers
  3. Computer User Support Specialists
  4. Network and Computer Systems Administrators
  5. Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers
  6. Information Technology Project Managers
  7. Computer Systems Analysts
  8. Computer Programmers
  9. Computer Systems Engineers/Architects
  10. Software Developers (Systems Software)

With the growing demand, and considering that tech jobs are generally hard-to-fill, it's probably not surprising that Recruiters are likely to experience challenges when sourcing potential candidates for these positions. Our Hiring Scale scores mobile technology jobs as a 78, out of a possible 99. This means that these jobs are likely to be very difficult-to-fill on average across the US. The below heat map of major metro areas in the US confirms this. There are only a few green locations, which would represents locations that currently represent the best conditions for finding qualified potential candidates.

The most difficulties are likely to be seen in Columbia (MO), Bloomington-Normal (IL), and Dubuque (IA). These 3 locations all score higher than a 90 on our Hiring Scale. San Francisco, part of the Silicon Valley, is the 4th hardest location, scoring an 88.

Most In-Demand Certifications for Tech Jobs

By Abby Lombardi on April 15, 2013 in Computer/Math/IT.

Tech hiring continues to grow, and there aren't any indications that it will stop. In March, there were 809,000 jobs posted online for programmers and technology professionals. With competition among employers continuing and recruiting becoming more difficult, we wanted to share the 15 licenses and certifications that are most commonly specified in IT job ads.

  1. Project Management Professional (PMP)
  2. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  3. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  4. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
  5. Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  6. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)
  7. Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
  8. Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)
  9. DoD 8570 Certification
  10. Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)
  11. Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
  12. ITIL Foundation certification (v3)
  13. Certified Scrum Coach
  14. IBM Rational Unified Process Certification (RUP)
  15. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)

Various Microsoft certifications appear most often on this list – 4 of the above 15 are Microsoft related. Cisco certifications appear 3 times.  We thought it was interesting that HIPPA certifications made this list. However, when we looked at the ads, the positions are at healthcare companies and involve regulated health tech systems or networks. As health technology grows with things like electronic medical records, IT professionals are being required to build, maintain, and ensure their systems are secure and meet federal guidelines. Do any of the above certifications surprise you?

Hiring Trends for the Most In-demand Industry: General Medical and Surgical Hospitals

By Ashley Rowe on April 12, 2013 in Health Care, Hiring Demand Indicators.

Last week, we updated our list of the most in-demand industries where the general medical and surgical hospitals industry continued to hold the #1 spot. Today, we drilled down into this specific industry to analyze recent hiring trends. January 2013 marked a 4-year high for general medical and surgical hospital demand. In March 2013, over 114,000 job listings were posted online. This represents a 10% increase over the same time last year.

Hiring Demand for General Medical and Surgical Hospitals – 4 Year Hiring Trends

Most Commonly Advertised General Medical and Surgical Hospitals Job Titles

  1. Registered Nurse
  2. Physical Therapist
  3. Occupational Therapist
  4. Medical Assistant
  5. Pharmacy Technician
  6. Phlebotomist
  7. Medical Technologist
  8. Nurse
  9. Security Officer
  10. Registered Nurse Medical Surg

With the general medical and surgical hospital industry leading hiring demand, it can be expected that the top 3 job titles on this list are the same top 3 we see across the nation. The only difference is that they appear in a different order. Physical Therapist is the most advertised job title nationwide, while Registered Nurse is the most in-demand title for this specific industry. Of these job titles, Security Officer is the only other job that also appears among the most commonly advertised titles.

Are recruiting conditions more difficult for the industry that continues to lead job demand? In the broader sense, recruiting for general medical and surgical hospital jobs is likely to be only moderately difficult, scoring a 43 on our Hiring Scale, out of a possible 99, where 99 indicates hard-to-fill. However, when recruiting for a more in-demand position, such as Physical Therapists, the difficulty-to-fill increases. The average Hiring Scale score for Physical Therapists is 76. The best location to recruit this talent is Albany-Schenectady-Troy (NY), while the most difficult metro area is likely to be Pittsfield (MA), which scores a 95. Albany has a larger talent pool in relation to the current demand, whereas Recruiters in Pittsfield are experiencing the opposite scenario. Oddly enough, Albany (highlighted below in green) happens to be located next to Pittsfield (highlighted below in brown). Recruiters in Pittsfield can reduce hiring difficulty by advertising for talent in Albany. However, Recruiters would need to ensure that their Physical Therapist candidates are licensed to work in either state, New York or Massachusetts.

Mathematical Science Jobs for Math Awareness Month

By Ashley Rowe on April 6, 2013 in Computer/Math/IT.

Did you know that April is Mathematics Awareness Month? In honor of this occasion, we looked at hiring trends for mathematical science jobs. What job titles are most in-demand and just how difficult-to-fill are these positions?

Most Commonly Advertised Mathematical Science Job Titles

  1. Operations Analyst
  2. Supply Chain Analyst
  3. Operations Research Analyst
  4. Inventory Analyst
  5. Statistician
  6. Biostatistician
  7. Clinical Data Manager
  8. Actuarial Analyst
  9. Senior Operational Analyst
  10. Senior Biostatistician

It appears that the most commonly advertised mathematical science jobs listed above are Analysts and Statisticians. These jobs require candidates to organize, analyze and interpret data. In the past year, hiring for mathematical and science occupations reached a 4-year high during September 2012, with about 19,100 job ads. Over the past 90 days, job volume increased 2% when compared to the same 90-day period in 2012. Since mathematical science occupations mostly involve analyzing and reporting data, are we seeing an increase in demand for these occupations because of the concurrent rising interest in "big data"?

With a shortage of skilled workers in STEM fields and data analysis, it may be expected that mathematical science occupations are likely to be difficult to recruit. Mathematical science occupations scores a 64 on our Hiring Scale out of a possible 99, where 99 demonstrates hard-to-fill. Specific job titles like Biostatistician and Clinical Data Manager are even more difficult to recruit, both scoring a 67. The best recruiting conditions for mathematical science occupations are likely to be in Orlando-Kissimmee (FL), which currently scores an 8. Only 2 other metro areas score less than 20 on our Hiring Scale, Miami (FL) and Sacremento (CA). In comparison, employers and recruiters in Lexington (KY) are likely to have the most difficulty when recruiting, scoring a 92.
