There has been a lot of news recently about companies investing in e-commerce platforms and increasing their e-retail systems. Forrester predicts that online retail sales will grow 12% this year and an additional 161,000 jobs for various e-commerce positions will be created – particularly in retailers' technology, customer service, and fulfillment departments. We wanted to see if employers are already gearing up for an increase in hiring demand. It seems that companies are, in fact, increasing their recruiting for this talent. In April, there were approximately 35,000 jobs available online for professionals with e-commerce skills and experience. This represents a 22% year-over-year increase and marks a new high in demand.

Hiring Demand for E-Commerce Professionals

Source: WANTED Analytics

Some of the fields with the most e-commerce hiring were web development, marketing, and software engineering. Web development and software engineering would match Forrester's predictions for growth in technology. However, it is interesting that they didn't predict marketing, which actually grew in demand 33% from last April (the most of the 3 previously mentioned fields.) The most commonly advertised unique job titles for e-commerce professionals are:

Web Developer

Java Developer

Business Analyst

Merchant Services Sales Account Executive

Account Executive

Ecommerce Business Analyst

Senior Java Developer

Project Manager Ecommerce

.NET Developer

Account Executive Business-to-Business Sales

With demand growing rather quickly, it's likely that Recruiters and hiring managers will face difficulty when sourcing candidates for these jobs. On average, they score a 68 on our Hiring Scale, which ranges from 1 – 99 with 99 representing the most difficult situation. However, some of the best places to find candidates are Santa Rosa (CA), Green Bay (WI), and York (PA). In these locations, there are fewer employers currently looking for this talent, yet there are pools of potential candidates to support hiring. Employers that are struggling to fill jobs may consider targeting job ads in some of these easier to fill locations. On a national level, this would require relocating a new hire. However, there may be nearby cities with better conditions that won't require national sourcing. For example, Recruiters in San Francisco and San Jose are likely to experience difficulties finding this talent, but the Santa Rosa metro area would be a good alternative market for them.

Below is a map of Hiring Scales across the US. If you're in a red area (represents a hard-to-fill area), try recruiting from areas that are yellow or green (representing less difficulty.)

Last week, we reported on hiring demand in Midland, Texas, the metropolitan area with the lowest unemployment rate. We saw that hiring demand had actually decreased over the past 90 days when compared to the same 90-day period in 2012. Today, we wanted to see if cities with high unemployment are also declining, or if they follow a different trend. The metro area with the highest unemployment (as of the most recent BLS reports in March 2013) is Yuma, Arizona. Here, the unemployment rate is currently 26%, much higher than the national rate of 7.6%. Over the past 90 days, there were approximately 3,900 jobs available online. While Midland saw a decline in demand, this is actually a 5.6% year-over-year increase versus the same 90-day time period last year. Demand in Yuma reached a peak in October of last year, but then declined drastically in the last 2 months of the year, and has been fairly steady since the beginning of 2013.

Hiring Demand in Yuma, Arizona – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The 5 industries with the most demand in Yuma, AZ over the past 90 days were:

Other General Government Support

Administration of Human Resource Programs (except Education, Public Health, and Veterans' Affairs Programs)

General Freight Trucking, Long-Distance, Truckload

Medical Laboratories

Elementary and Secondary Schools

All of the industries listed above experienced year-over-year growth. Government Support organizations not only posted the most ads in the past 90 days, but also had the highest percentage increase. While there was just 1 ad posted online during this 90-day time frame last year, this year saw more than 120 ads.

Some of the occupational fields with the most job ads in the past 90 days were Truck Drivers, Registered Nurses, First-line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Retail Sales, and Supervisors of Food Preparation Workers. Of these 5 fields, 3 declined in demand compared to last year: RN's, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, and Retail Salespersons. The unique job titles that are most commonly advertised are listed below.

Physical Therapist

Occupational Therapist

Registered Nurse

Driver

Teller

Owner Operator

Sales Representative

Store Manager

Customer Service Representative

Store Associate

Companies have been using gamification techniques to engage customers and they're are also incorporating these strategies into employee and candidate programs through orientation, onboarding, health and wellness, and employee referral campaigns. As gamification evolves and more employers utilize these strategies, will hiring for gamification and video gaming skills continue to grow? When comparing April 2012 to April 2013, demand rose 23%. Over the past 4 years, there was a surge in demand during October and December 2011 for Video Gaming User Specialists.

Hiring Demand for Gamification and Video Gaming Skills

Most of the job titles above are new to the list since the last time we reported on this topic. The only two jobs that still commonly require gamification and video gaming skills are Video Gaming User Specialist and Video Game Sales Specialists, which both moved up the list. 40% of the job titles listed are tech related. The remaining jobs are in marketing, sales, and educational fields. The educational title of Camp Instructor refers to summer technology programs at college campuses that will teach young people how to create video games.

It is likely to be difficult to hire candidates with gamification or video gaming experience, scoring a 64 on our Hiring Scale. (Our Hiring Scale ranges from 1 – 99, with 99 representing hard-to-fill.) San Francisco, the city with the greatest number of job ads, currently has some of the most difficult recruiting conditions, scoring a 76. Recruiters in San Francisco may potentially reduce hiring difficulty by sourcing talent in a nearby city with more favorable conditions, such as San Jose (CA), which scores a 47 on our Hiring Scale. San Jose presents the second best recruiting conditions next to Utica-Rome (NY), currently scoring a 13.

Hiring demand for Spanish speaking jobs continues to be one of our more popular blog topics. Since we last highlighted bilingual Spanish hiring trends about 9 months ago, we thought it was time to revisit demand for this skill set. In June 2012, we found that hiring for Spanish speaking candidates was on the rise, increasing 33% year-over-year when compared to June 2011. After that, demand continued to rise until it dipped in October, likely an annual 4th quarter decline. Hiring for jobs that require Spanish language skills in 2013 started ahead of 2012. But, in April demand fell 11% lower than the same time last year. One reason demand in April 2013 fell is because there was a surge in demand for Registered Nurses that speak Spanish at this time last year, highlighted in light blue below. Demand for this occupation in April 2013 declined 61% since last April.

Currently, the Midland, Texas metropolitan area boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the US. The latest numbers from March show unemployment there at 3.1%, significantly lower than the national average of 7.6%. We wanted to take a look at recent hiring trends in this metro area. Does demand follow a similar trends as the rest of the US? Over the past 90 days, there were approximately 8,000 jobs available online in the Midland metro area. Surprisingly, this is a 9% year-over-year decline in demand. After reaching a 4-year high in April 2012, demand has declined steadily.

Below, we listed demand in these cities and the most advertised occupations in these areas.

Bethesda, MD

Last week, we highlighted that tightening consumer budgets may be affecting their discretionary spending. We looked at trends in the retail sector to see if employers were feeling an impact reflected in hiring. Today, we're looking at another popular discretionary category, full-service and limited-service restaurants. If consumers are feeling the squeeze, then they may be dining out less, which in turn would mean restaurants might be hiring less. Recent hiring trends demonstrate that this is not the case. Restaurant hiring was at its highest during January 2013. Since then, hiring declined slightly. However, demand over the past 30 days was 27% higher than the same 30-day period in 2012.

Each metro area with the highest demand for restaurant jobs experienced year-over-year growth. The New York metro area had the highest demand while Los Angeles experienced the largest increase. When we last covered restaurant hiring demand, Atlanta (GA) made the list. Although Atlanta descended to the #6 slot, this metro area still experienced 26% growth over last year. Below are the 5 locations with the largest job ad volume and their percentage of increase when comparing the past 30 days to the same 30-day period last year.

Combined Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Including Fast Food

Food Service Managers

Cooks, Restaurant

Waiters and Waitresses

Of these positions, Waiters and Waitresses had the highest growth in demand, rising 71% year-over-year. Recruiting conditions for Waiters and Waitresses are likely to be favorable, scoring a 5 on our Hiring Scale. Our Hiring Scale scores hiring difficulty on a scale of 1 – 99, with 99 indicating hardest-to-fill. On the other hand, Food Service Managers are likely to be the most difficult-to-fill out of these positions, scoring a 60. McAllen (TX) is likely to offer the best conditions for sourcing this talent, scoring a 5, while Boulder (CO) presents the most challenging conditions, scoring a 91. In McAllen, the current candidate supply outnumbers demand and in Boulder, the talent pool isn't large enough to meet the numbers of jobs being advertised.

Hiring demand for common programming languages continues to be one of our most popular blog topics. We last reported on the most in-demand programming languages in October and we thought that it was time for an update. We reviewed popular programming languages and listed them below in order of greatest demand.

10 Most Advertised Programming Languages

Structured Query Language (SQL)

JavaScript (JS)

Java

Hypertext Processor (PHP)

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX)

Python Extensible Programming Language (Python)

Practical Extraction and Reporting Language (PERL)

Ruby on Rails (Ruby or RoR)

Microsoft C# .NET

Combined, there were over 442,500 listings for these programming languages, a .5% year-over-year decrease when comparing March 2013 to March 2012. Structured Query Language continues to have the greatest number of job ads posted online with more than 215,500 ads appearing in March 2013. JavaScript is second in demand with over 161,000 ads. At #7 on the above list, Python had the largest growth in the past year, rising 19%. AJAX experienced the biggest decrease, shrinking 23%. These programming languages were most commonly required for the following occupations.

Web Developers

Software Developers, Applications

Computer Systems Analysts

Network and Computer Systems Administrators

Computer Programmers

The cities with the highest number of job ads posted online for these 10 programming languages are listed below. This list hasn't changed much since the last time we discussed this topic. The biggest difference is that Chicago (IL) was replaced with Boston (MA). Of these locations, Los Angeles experienced the largest increase in-demand and New York was the only area to decline.

Of the most commonly advertised programming languages, AJAX is likely to be the hardest-to-fill, scoring an 85 on our Hiring Scale. Our Hiring Scale ranks hiring difficulty on a scale of 1 – 99, with 99 indicating difficult-to-fill. Ruby, PHP, and JavaScript also each score above 80. The Santa Rosa-Petaluma metro area currently has the best conditions for sourcing candidates familiar with AJAX, scoring a 43. This city also presents the least difficult conditions for finding Ruby candidates. Fresno (CA) has the most favorable recruiting conditions for PHP skills and Eugene (OR) for JavaScript.

Every month, the New York City metro area consistently outnumbers all other metros in hiring demand. In March, there were more than 437,000 ads available online in the greater New York area. Despite having 170,000 more ads than 2nd place Los Angeles, this is a 1% decline in demand compared to March of 2012. Approximately 89% of available job ads during March were posted by employers, whereas staffing firms and recruiting agencies only accounted for about 11% of ads.

Below is a list of the 10 industries that had the most jobs advertised online during March. 8 of the 10 industries experienced year-over-year declines in demand. Only limited service restaurants and securities brokerages saw increases, both with over 40% more jobs this March than last year. General medical and surgical hospitals, which is the industry with the most ads across the US, had the largest decline compared to 2012. There were 47% fewer ads in March for the New York City area than appeared online last year.

Happy Earth Day! In celebration, we looked at hiring demand for "green" jobs in the US. In total, there were more than 256,000 jobs posted online in the past 90 days that are considered "green." This is an 8.4% increase, when compared to the same 90-day period in 2012. It seems that every year, the number of environmentally beneficial jobs increases.

Hiring Demand for Green Jobs in the US – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Below are the most commonly advertised "green" job titles:

Electrical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer

Electrician

Manufacturing Engineer

HVAC Technician

Senior Electrical Engineer

Owner Operator

Environmental Engineer

HVAC Service Technician

Maintenance Supervisor

Engineering-related jobs are highly in-demand to create the next generation of environmentally-friendly products. In addition, we see many Electrician and HVAC positions, since many homes and buildings are trying to reduce energy costs by installing "greener" air conditioning and heating systems.

The cities that saw the most demand over the past 90 days were New York, Houston, Washington (DC), Los Angeles, and Boston. Of these 5 metro areas, only Washington DC experienced a year-over-year decline in demand. Over the last 90 days, there were about 5,400 "green" jobs advertised online in the DC metro area, which is 4% fewer than were posted online in 2012. In comparison, Houston had the largest increase, with 21% more green jobs available online in the last 90 days versus the same time period in 2012.

This list is very different from the industries with the most demand in the United States. The greatest disparity is with general medical and surgical hospitals. While this industry dominated the US list for over a year, it ranks #9 on Canada's list. Both Canada and the US are experiencing an aging population, but separate healthcare systems affect hiring demand differently. The looming Affordable Care Act will provide more Americans with healthcare coverage. The anticipation of an influx of patients brought on by this bill is intensifying the need for medical professionals at healthcare facilities. In the US, general medical and surgical hospital hiring increased 6% in the past year. Of the most advertised industries in Canada, this industry saw the biggest decline when compared to the same 30-day period last year, dropping 29%. Other than general medical and surgical hospitals, only 4 of the industries with the highest job ad volume are the same on both lists including administrative management and general management consulting services; custom computer programming services; commercial banking; and engineering services. Other tobacco product manufacturing experienced the greatest demand and advertising agencies had the highest increase in job ad volume over last year, rising 412%.

Last week, we provided an update on recent hiring demand for jobs that require robotics skills. The fields that had the most job ads were healthcare, engineering, production workers, repair and maintenance workers, and IT. Today, we wanted to share the best locations to source for each of these occupational areas.

Healthcare

Nationally, healthcare jobs that require robotics skills score a 41 on our Hiring Scale. The Hiring Scale ranges from 1 to 99, with 99 being the most difficult conditions. Two cities in the US are tied with the least difficult conditions. Columbus, OH and Peoria, IL both scored a 10 on our Hiring Scale. In addition, these cites have a lower-than-average posting period. While the national average is just over 7 weeks, healthcare job ads with robotics requirements in these 2 cities remain online for about 6 weeks.

3 Best Locations for Sourcing Healthcare Candidates with Robotics Skills:

Columbus, OH

Peoria, IL

Des Moines, IA

Hiring Scale for Healthcare Jobs Requiring Robotics Skills – Columbus, OH

Engineering

Nationally, engineering jobs that require robotics skills score higher on the Hiring Scale than healthcare jobs. These positions average a 60, meaning they will be moderately difficult to fill. The best location to source talent or target your job ads is Huntsville, AL which scores a 21.

3 Best Locations for Sourcing Engineering Candidates with Robotics Skills:

Production

On average, production jobs that require robotics skills are likely to be fairly easy to fill, scoring a 31 on the Hiring Scale. However, the average posting period for these positions is still rather long, at 43 days. This means that Recruiters can expect to leave job ads online for 6 weeks before they collect enough resumes and applications and can begin the interviewing process. Los Angeles, which is the best location in the US for this talent, has an average posting period of about 5.5 weeks.

Repair and Maintenance

The Hiring Scale scores repair and maintenance occupations as a 22 on average across the US, and it's likely to be the least difficult-to-fill of these 5 occupations. However, this is the average and some locations (like Cleveland, OH and Albany, NY) are experiencing much more difficulty sourcing candidates. The best current location in the US is New York, NY, which may provide a good source of talent for the Albany metro area.

Information Technology

IT jobs that require robotics skills are the most difficult to fill of these 5 fields. Despite seeing declining demand over the past, our Hiring Scale scores these positions as a 70, meaning they are likely to be difficult-to-fill. San Antonio, TX currently has the best conditions for Recruiters to find this niche talent. With only 2 companies currently hiring for robotical-skilled IT professionals, you are likely to see far less competition than in the rest of the US.

Now that it's mid-April, many soon-to-be graduating college seniors are feeling the pressure to find a job. Forbes recently provided a list of the 10 best cities for college graduates. Their list uses data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, and Rent.com for apartment rental information to determine the best places for new college grads to be looking for work in 2013.

The 10 cities on Forbes' list are:

Atlanta, GA

Boston, MA

Houston, TX

Denver, CO

Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN

Seattle, WA

Dallas, TX

Raleigh, NC

Washington, DC

St. Louis, MO

In total, these 10 cities had more than 1.2 million job ads available online during March, representing a combined 5% year-over-year increase. Of these above, the metro area with the most job ads in March was Washington, DC. Here, there were more than 236,000 ads during March. Despite consistently having the most job postings each month, the DC metro area was 1 of 3 listed above that saw year-over-year declines in hiring demand. Job postings in DC were down about 0.7% compared to March of 2012, Minneapolis is declined 4.2%, and St. Louis saw the largest drop with 12% fewer jobs this March than last year. In comparison, Houston experienced the largest year-over-year increase. In this area, there were approximately 135,000 ads available online in March, up 16% from last year.

Source: WANTED Analytics

Below are the 10 occupations that were most commonly advertised in these 10 cities during March 2013. Registered Nurses appeared as the most in-demand job. This isn't too surprising since Nurses usually see the most job ads on a national level, as well. Nurses also experienced a 25% year-over-year increase, second only to First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation/Serving Workers. Other jobs that saw growth from March of last year were Software Developers, Retail Salespersons, First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Marketing Managers, and Customer Service Representatives. However, it is interesting that the only 3 of the below 10 occupations to see declining demand were technology related. Web Developers, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, and Computer Systems Analysts all saw declines.

TS SCI may continue to top the lists, but demand for this authorization declined in the past year. During March 2013, there were about 20,000 job ads posted online, down 23% from March 2012.

Job ads for TS SCI clearance most often appear in computer systems design services; engineering services; and in search, detection, navigation, guidance, aeronautical, and nautical system and instrument industries. Each of these areas saw a decrease in demand over the past year. Below are the job titles that most often require TS SCI clearance.

Since we last covered hiring demand for TS SCI clearance, the 5 most advertised job titles remain the same. However, there are 3 new job titles this time: Social Scientist Human Terrain, Technical Lead, and Senior Network Engineer. They replaced Senior Systems Administrator, Java Developer and Intelligence Analyst.

In March, Washington (DC) continued to experience the most demand for job ads that require TS SCI clearance. Since TS SCI is often required for government and contractor jobs, it makes sense that this security clearance is most in-demand here. Of the 10 cities with the greatest demand, only Charlottesville had year-over-year growth. Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News saw the largest drop in demand, declining 37%.

On average, Recruiters are likely to find it difficult-to-hire candidates with TS SCI clearance, scoring a 66 on our Hiring Scale. The Hiring Scale measures difficulty on a scale of 0 – 99, where 99 demonstrates hardest-to-fill. With most of these jobs being located in Washington (DC) and in government contracting, many Recruiters may need to relocate candidates in order to compete for talent.
