Last week, New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced the "Made in NY" initiative will be expanded to technology, with the goal of encouraging tech startups and nurturing them to grow. The campaign, which started with the media and entertainment industries, allows companies with at least 75% of their production in the city to be able to display the “Made in NY” logo on their ads and websites. In addition, tech companies will be able to advertise jobs on the www.wearemadeinny.com website, which already has 3,000 openings listed by 980 tech startups in NYC. With tech demands surging across the US – and likely to grow in New York – we thought it was a good time to revisit hiring in the "Silicon Alley."
In January, there were more than 46,000 jobs posted online for technology positions in the entire New York metro area. New York City specifically saw 22,600 postings at a 4% year-over-year increase. The entire New York metro area saw the highest demand for technical skilled professionals during January, followed by Washington (DC), San Francisco, and Chicago. As a comparison, there were just over 44,000 tech jobs in the entire Silicon Valley, consisting of the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas, growing slightly faster than New York City at 8% year-over-year.

The technical fields with the most job ads during January were web developers, computer systems analysts, and applications software engineers. The commonly advertised job titles in New York City are:
