A study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau stated, "Employment in the ad-supported internet ecosystem has doubled over the past 4 years to 1.5 million, making it one of the most dynamic sectors in the recessionary American economy." To further examine hiring trends in this area, we took a look at online job ads in the Advertising, Public Relations, and Related Services industry that refer to Internet, digital, or media skills.

When we first looked at this, we thought of online advertising jobs, but on further investigation, we realized the need for these skills extends beyond just advertising. Sales related positions dominate the list of most commonly advertised job titles – likely sales professionals that are selling online advertising space. Web Developer also ranks among these titles because without someone to build the website for content, sales professionals would not have online ads to sell. Copywriting also ranks among these titles because online content needs to be created for web applications.

In May, hiring demand in the Advertising, Public Relations and Related Services industry with Internet, digital, or media skills reached its highest level over the past 4 years. This area saw a 30% year-over-year increase as of September 2012 with just over 3,000 online job ads.

New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have the highest volume of job ads posted online and the largest talent pools. However, these metro areas and employers nationwide are still likely to face challenging recruiting conditions. Positions may take a long time to fill because Recruiters have to sort through large applicant pools to find a candidate that best fits the job description. It takes a long time to sort through thousands of candidates – whether through resumes or online sources. Nationwide, job ads are posted online for about 6 weeks.
