When we talk about the Silicon Valley, we seem to always talk about IT jobs. But, if you're recruiting in San Francisco or San Jose, you probably know there's a lot more going on there than just tech hiring. We thought it would be interesting to look at some of the other jobs that are most in-demand in these metro areas and how difficult-to-fill those occupations are likely to be.
In September, there were more than 122,000 job ads online for positions that aren't tech-related. This is a 22% year-over-year increase when compared to September of 2011.
Hiring Demand in the Silicon Valley for Occupations (not IT Related Jobs) – 4 Year Hiring Trend
Some of the fields with the most demand are marketing, healthcare, engineering, administrative, finance and accounting, and sales areas. Financial occupations grew 17% year-over-year in September, marketing was up 19%, while healthcare increased 21% compared to the same month last year. However, sales and administrative jobs grew the most, both seeing 25% more jobs being advertised online in September versus September of 2011. Here are the 15 most commonly advertised job titles in the Silicon Valley (excluding technology titles):
- Physical Therapist
- Occupational Therapist
- Administrative Assistant
- Sales Representative
- Teller
- Customer Service Representative
- Registered Nurse
- Sales Manager
- Account Executive
- Accountant
- Sales Associate
- Manager
- Personal Banker
- Product Manager
- Store Manager
Of the above mentioned fields – marketing, healthcare, engineering, sales, finance and accounting, and administrative – administrative occupations have the shortest average posting period in the Silicon Valley area. Job listings for Administrative Assistants, Office Managers, and other positions in this field remain online for 33 days – just under 5 weeks. This falls in line with the national average posting period. Despite this, it is harder than average to fill administrative jobs in the Silicon Valley compared to national recruiting conditions. This is likely because demand is growing quickly and may be outpacing the growth of the talent supply.
Hiring Scale for Administrative Occupations in the Silicon Valley
In comparison, we see that engineering occupations are likely to be online for the longest time period of the aforementioned fields. Engineering jobs in the Silicon Valley remain online for an average of 6.5 weeks. Our Hiring Scale shows that engineering jobs will be difficult to fill across the US, but will be significantly harder in the San Francisco and San Jose areas.
