Recently Blogging4Jobs wrote about Hot Healthcare Recruiting Trends. In part 4 of this series, Increasingly Sophisticated Retention Efforts, they mentioned that the severe shortage for nurses was identified 15 years ago. Nurses weren't the only healthcare profession seen in that shortage. Along with Nurses, available Physician candidates also decreased and this occupation remains difficult to recruit.
Hiring demand isn't making this situation any easier. Despite some ups and downs, in the past 2 years, from August 2010 – August 2012, job ads posted online for Physicians increased 12%.

- Practice Management
- Electronic Medical Record EMR Systems
- Administrative Support
EMR exceeds demand of other skills or knowledge in Physician job ads. This shouldn't be surprising. As we mentioned in yesterday's article, demand for EMR or EHR skills in ads for healthcare positions increased 88% in 2 years. In addition to these skills, employers are looking for job candidates that are Board Certified, Board Eligible, or specialized in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
With the shortage of candidates, our Hiring Scale™ heat map below shows that the national hiring environment is more likely to be moderately difficult. Recruiting conditions are most encouraging in Goldsboro, NC. Other metropolitan areas with the least difficult recruiting environments are featured in green.
The shortage of available candidates is one problem. The next hurdle is, once you find an in-demand candidate, how do you keep them? Jennifer Metivier, Executive Director of Association of Staff Physician Recruiters, recommends mentor programs and improving quality of life for employees. With a demanding job that requires long days and catering to the public, there is a trend emerging in healthcare retention to offer flexible time and employee based scheduling that helps employees balance life and work.
