School is Back in Session: Hiring at Colleges & Universities

By Abby Lombardi on August 20, 2012 in Hiring Demand Indicators.

As college students are getting ready to pack up and head back to classes and professors are gearing up to start another term, we thought it would be interesting to see what hiring colleges and universities in the US recruited for over the summer. When we looked at this list previously, we found some surprises in the commonly advertised jobs. Has demand changed?

In July, more than 46,000 jobs were available for positions at colleges and junior colleges across America. This is an 11% increase from July of 2011. 39,000 jobs were posted for colleges and universities, and about 7,600 positions were for junior colleges.

When we last looked at hiring at colleges, we saw that administration jobs were the most in-demand. Still, Education Administrators were the most commonly advertised occupation in July. More than 4,000 jobs were available at a 12% year-over-year increase. Vocational Education Teachers were the second highest position and the most in-demand kind of teaching position. School counselors, administrative assistants, and business teachers rounded out the 5 most demanded jobs. Only 3 of the below 10 occupations are teaching-related. We initially thought we would see demand for in-demand fields – like tech, healthcare, and engineering. However, only health specialty teachers made this list. Are we educating enough tech, science, and engineers to fill the demand of employers in the US?

Some other interesting occupations that made this list were Registered Nurses and Coaches and Scouts. Registered Nurses are needed to staff health centers and clinics. Also, with fall sports seasons getting started, many universities are likely gearing up their athletic programs for the coming year and looking for the next wave of student athletes to bring up from high schools.
