Many people have growing concerns that technology, automation, and artificial intelligence will kill jobs in the US. A recent article in the Midsize Insider talks about how far automation may be reaching. They use the example of tax preparers who may be struggling to find work because jobs are being "automated away" by online self-service tax software. However, will building new automated processes, software, and technology actually create jobs? Will organizations need more employees to operate or build these machines? We looked at hiring demand for artificial intelligence skills across the US to see if demand is increasing and what types of jobs commonly require these skills.
In June 2012, there were just over 900 jobs advertised online for "technology automation" or "artificial intelligence" positions. Although, this isn't a huge number of job ads, hiring demand has been trending up over the past years and is up about 132% from it's lowest point in July 2009.
Hiring Demand for Technology Automation and Artificial Intelligence
Many of the jobs that demand artificial intelligence or technology automation knowledge are technology positions. Here are the 5 most commonly advertised titles:
- Software Enigneer
- Senior Software Engineer
- Java Software Engineer
- Algorithm Specialist Optimization Algorithms
- Sales Representative
Although not in the top 5, we thought some of the other job titles that require these skills were interesting, such as Post Doctoral Fellow Sensor Data Fusion, Senior Scientist, and Property Adjuster. You might be wondering why Property Adjusters need automation skills? According to job ads, Property Adjusters are being required to utilize available technology automation and processes to efficiently handle claims. It will be interesting to see how many jobs in the future require the use of automation and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and actually reduce expenses.
Will hiring demand continue to trend up for automation? Will more jobs require these skills?
