By Abby Lombardi on July 23, 2012 in Labor Market Dynamics.

We thought it was time to revisit the most commonly required skills in online job ads again. However, this time we thought we'd compare the 20 most commonly required skills in the East Coast versus the West Coast.

Before scrolling down, do you think they'll be similar? Will the West Coast require more computer programming or tech skills?

As it turns out, many of the skills that are commonly required in job ads are similar in both areas. Of the 20 skills above, 16 appear on both lists, although they may be in a different order of demand. The first 3 for both the East and West Coasts are the same and in the same order: Microsoft Office, project management, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

2 skills commonly included in online job ads on the East Coast, but not appearing in the top 20 on the West Coast are cash registers and quality control.

Skills on the West Coast, but not among the most commonly advertised on the East Coast are JavaScript and HTML. The states of California and Washington often have high demand for technology professionals, so seeing these 2 tech skills is not surprising.
