Is Hiring in the Construction Industry Bouncing Back?

Employment in the construction industry has been growing slowly since the recession began. With a warmer than average winter across much of the US, hiring in this sector has been strong. In May, there were more than 32,000 job ads posted online. This represents a 22% increase compared to last year. Will the construction industry maintain this growing hiring demand in the summer months?

The 10 cities with the most online job ads in construction are listed below. Washington, DC saw the highest number of job ads with 1,200 and growing 7% versus May 2011. However, it was San Francisco that grew the most of these 10 cities. Employers here placed 58% more job ads in May 2012 than they did in 2011. Of the below 10 metro areas, only Chicago experienced a decline.

The most demanded occupation category within the construction industry during May was First-line Managers of Construction Workers. Other in-demand fields were Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanics and Installers, Truck Drivers, Construction Managers, and Industrial Engineers. All 5 of these occupations saw year-over-year growth when compared to the same time period in 2011. Below are the 10 jobs titles that are most commonly advertised online in the construction industry.
