Hiring Grows for Nursing Assistants

Nurses Assistant Week begins today, so we thought it was an appropriate time to look at hiring demand for these healthcare professionals. During May, there were more than 47,000 job ads online for nursing assistants at either hospitals or as part of home health care. About 20,000 of these ads were for Home Health Aides, while the majority (more than 26,000) of the ads were for Nursing Aides, Attendants, and Orderlies. Overall, hiring demand for this occupation increased 12% in May versus the same month period in 2011.

The most common certifications required in job ads for Nursing Assistants are:

  1. Certification in Nursing Administration (CNA)
  2. Certified Registered Nurse (RN)
  3. Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  4. Home Health Aide certification (HHA)
  5. Basic Life Support (BLS)

Below is a heat map showing the 100 areas with the most demand for Nursing Aides and Orderlies in May. Interestingly, of the top 5 cities – New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Tampa – are located on the East Coast. Recruiters in New York posted the most job ads for this occupation with 2,300 positions being advertised online. This is almost a 10% year-over-year increase when compared to May of 2011.

Our Hiring Scale™ shows that the best places to recruit Nurses Assistants are currently Abilene (Texas), Fort Smith (Arkansas), and Fort Walton Beach (Florida). In these locations, hiring demand remains relatively low and the available pool of candidates is large. Recruiters are likely to experience less competition and a shorter time-to-fill for Nurse Assistant openings than on average across the US.
