The Best Markets to Recruit Industrial Engineering Candidates

By Abby Lombardi on June 12, 2012 in Engineering.

Engineers have been in high-demand over the past year and we wanted to look at hiring trends for the most commonly recruited type of engineer: Industrial Engineers. After declining demand in the last quarter of 2011, the volume of job ads for Industrial engineers has grown steadily so far in 2012, now up 32% compared to January. In May, more than 68,000 job ads were seen online for Industrial Engineers, a new 4-year high in demand. Some of the industries with the most demand for Industrial Engineers were Engineering Services, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, and Medical and Surgical Device Manufacturing, all of which was year-over-year increases in hiring.

With this increasing hiring demand, it's not too surprising that Recruiters are likely to see more difficulties in sourcing enough potential candidates and a longer time spent on filling job openings. In fact, the average online posting period of an Industrial Engineer job ad is 46 days nationwide. That's 6.5 weeks spent on sourcing and interviewing potential candidates.

Below are the 10 metropolitan areas with the most online job ads during May. Recruiters in Detroit posted 2,400 job ads, up 38% from May of 2011. However, Seattle experienced the greatest year-over-year growth in demand of the below 10 cities, at a 47% increase. Los Angeles, Houston, New York, and San Francisco also increased their hiring demand, while Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, and San Jose placed fewer ads in May compared to last year.

While the national average is about 6.5 weeks, Recruiters in Boston and San Jose leave their job ads online for more than 7 weeks.
