Hiring for the "Best Computer Job For the Future" – Mobile App Developers

By Abby Lombardi on June 4, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT, Occupations.

ITCareerFinder.com recently named Mobile App Developers as the "Best Computer Job For the Future." We thought it would be interesting to look at recent online job ads to see if this position has seen skyrocketing demand already. With the growth in the mobile market, it's not too surprising that hiring demand has in fact grown. In May, more than 1,400 tech job ads called for mobile app developer skills. This is a 52% increase over May of 2011. In the below graph representing the number of available job ads online, you can see that the volume continues to trend up steadily every month.

Also not too surprising, is that our Hiring Scale shows these jobs are hard-to-fill on average across the US. Ares with the highest demand are likely to see more difficulties than average. For example, San Jose is one of the areas with the most job ads for Mobile App Developers. This level of demand, coupled with a limited talent pool that isn't growing at the same rate as hiring, means that Recruiters will compete heavily and experience a longer time-to-fill than average. In this area, job ads remain online for an average of 45 days – or about 6.5 weeks. On the other hand, it is likely for tech professionals with mobile developing skills to find work across the US, and especially in San Jose.

The limited available talent pool is seen due to the variety of skills often required in jobs for Mobile App Developers. In addition to need programming and software development knowledge, candidates need to know the different operating systems – specifically iOS and Android platforms. The 5 most commonly required skills are:

  1. Software development
  2. JavaScript
  3. iPhone (iOS)
  4. Android
  5. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

However, our Hiring Scale also shows that there are some regions in the US where Recruiters may find less competition and more potential candidates. For example, Recruiters in San Jose may find that the Riverside, CA metro area is a source of more candidates. With fewer employers currently sourcing for talent in this area, jobs are filled in an average of 38 days – 1 full week shorter than in San Jose.
