Hiring in Engineering Services Growing Again

It's been a while since we looked at hiring demand in the engineering services industry and the last time we reviewed online job ads, we saw declining demand. Since the beginning of 2012, the number of online job ads in this industry has steadily increased. During April 2012, more than 38,000 jobs were seen advertised online in the engineering services sector – up 17% compared to April 2011 and more than 57% compared to April 2010.

Below are the 10 occupations within engineering services that had the most online job ads during April 2012. Not too surprisingly, 6 of the below occupations are engineering related. Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Managers, and Environmental Engineers. Civil Engineers were not only the most commonly advertised occupation in April, but also saw the greatest year-over-year increase up 41% when compared to April 2011. The other in-demand occupations were technology related.

Since engineering and technology jobs are most in-demand, employers commonly require potential candidates to have knowledge or experience with several computer or engineering related tools and technologies. Below are some of the skills most commonly included in job ads in this industry:

  • Project management
  • Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Bentley Microstation
  • Structured query language (SQL)
  • Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL)
  • JavaScript
  • Microsoft .NET Framework (.NET)
  • Extensible markup language (XML)
  • Information assurance
  • Hypertext markup language (HTML)

The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of online job ads within engineering services companies during April were Washington (DC), Houston, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Washington, DC saw the greatest volume of online job ads by engineering services companies, up 54% compared to the same time period in 2011. Not only is demand the highest in the DC metro area, but our Hiring Scale™ also shows that employers here are currently experiencing some of the most difficult recruiting conditions. In fact, the average posting period in Washington, DC is about 6.5 weeks.

The Hiring Scale also shows that the best places to recruit engineering services professionals are currently Miami (FL), Fort Collins (CO), and Kennewick (WA). These areas are likely to fill job openings faster than the rest of the United States. Online job ads in these areas are posted for an average of about 5.8 weeks.
