The Sky is the Limit for Cloud Hiring

By Abby Lombardi on March 13, 2012 in Computer/Math/IT.

Hiring for cloud computing skills probably wont decline any time soon. 2011 brought great increases in job ads, and it hasn't stopped so far in 2012. In fact, a new record breaking high volume of job ads were posted online for this skill set. More than 5,100 job ads were posted online last month – almost double the volume seen in February 2011. However, as most Recruiters know, this drastic increase in hiring demand has not been met with talent supply, and these positions are becoming even harder to fill.

The most common occupations to require these skills are, not surprisingly, technology careers. Software Engineers, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects, and Network and Computer Systems Administrators are the 3 most demanded occupations with cloud computing skills. Also, hiring demand has doubled for all 3 of these positions over the past year. If you think tech talent are the only jobs to require this experience, you would be wrong. Technology jobs only account for two-thirds of cloud computing hiring demand during February. Other fields that increasingly require this experience include Marketing Managers (up 98% year-over-year), Sales Managers (up 123%), Management Analysts (up 400%), and Financial Analysts (up 200%).

Our Hiring Scale™ shows just how difficult conditions are likely to be across the US. Some of the most difficult conditions are in technology hubs, like San Francisco. In fact, Recruiters in this area leave job ads online for an average of 8 weeks. (In comparison, the US national average duration is 6 weeks.)

So, how can Recruiters source enough candidates and overcome this talent shortage? The first thing you could do is look at conditions in other areas. Relocation may be the best (and quickest) way to fill a job. The below chart shows Hiring Scale snapshots for the 5 metro areas that currently have the best markets for sourcing cloud computing skills. In these areas, there is less hiring demand and a higher volume of potential candidates, making these jobs easier to fill. Also, the time-to-fill is likely to be up to 2.5 weeks shorter!

If relocation is not an option, check out other local areas. For example, do Recruiters (and hiring managers) in San Francisco know that Sacramento has more favorable conditions for sourcing cloud skills? The average posting period in Sacramento is 6 weeks – 2 full weeks shorter than in San Francisco. And, since it's about 75 miles away, relocating a candidate isn't necessary.
