Software Engineers are in high demand these days, with online job ads up 6% nationally since the beginning of 2011. Employers and staffing agencies posted over 32,200 new online job ads in July, 16% more than in July 2010.

Our Hiring Scale™ calculations estimate that there are an average of 8 potential candidates in the US workforce for every new job posted in July. The difficulty of sourcing talent for these positions depends on the size of the local talent pool and the demand by employers in that area. The three metro areas with the highest hiring demand for Software Engineers during July range fairly widely in terms in sourcing difficulty. Recruiters in New York would have an easier time sourcing candidates for open positions than in either Seattle or San Jose, due to the much larger local talent pool: 9.8 candidates for every new position in NY. Seattle's hiring demand is the highest of any US metro, but has the smallest talent pool of these three cities, with just 4.5 candidates per opening.

With more than 6,500 companies currently looking to hire Software Engineers, the talent market is tight. The top employer by job ad volume, Microsoft, posted more than 1,900 new online job ads in July. 9 of the 10 direct employers have seen year-over-year growth, with only Amazon seeing a decline from July 2010.

Of the 10 metro areas with the highest ad volume, all but 2 saw year-over-year growth in demand for Software Engineers during July. Seattle leads the nation in demand, with more than 3,400 new job ads added in July, a 30% increase over the same period in 2010. The highest year-over-year growth belongs to Dallas, up more than 38% over the past year.
