New York Still Has Biggest Demand for Talent

New York continues to have the most job ads online every month. In June, more than 464,000 jobs were available in the NYC metro area. This is over 180,000 more than was seen for Los Angeles, which is the metro with the second highest demand. Hiring in NYC grew at a slower rate than the prior year. From June 2012 to June 2013, the number of available job ads grew 1.4%, compared to the 20% increase between June 2011 and 2012.

IT was the most in-demand field, followed by sales, management, administrative, and financial occupations. Here are the most commonly advertised unique job titles in the New York metro area:

  1. Administrative Assistant
  2. Java Developer
  3. Project Manager
  4. Business Analyst
  5. Teller
  6. Physical Therapist
  7. Customer Service Representative
  8. Sales Associate
  9. Occupational Therapist
  10. Registered Nurse
Of these above occupational fields, technology jobs are likely to be the hardest to fill. Our Hiring Scale, which ranges from 1-99 with 99 being the most difficult, scores these jobs at a 78. This probably isn't surprising since tech jobs are in hard-to-fill across the US and NY historically has one of the highest demands for this talent. Management occupations are another hard-to-recruit job of the above most in-demand fields. However, they score much lower than tech jobs on the Hiring Scale. Management positions in the NY metro area average a score of 56.

On the other hand, administrative occupations are likely to be the least difficult of the previously mentioned list. These jobs score a 17 on the Hiring Scale. Despite being one of the most in-demand fields and having "Administrative Assistant" as the most commonly advertised job title, the local talent pool seems to be able to adequately support the hiring demand by employers.
